AUG

AUG

“Powerful and accurate, the AUG scoped assault rifle compensates for its long reload times with low spread and a high rate of fire.” ― Official description

In the world of Counter-Strike, the AUG rifle, familiar to many under the old name Bullpup, has become a faithful companion to counter-terrorist fighters. Its unique characteristics and power make it an indispensable tool in the fight against terror. On the enemy side, terrorists responded with the Krieg 552, before the SG 553 took its place in the era of Global Offensive, representing worthy competition and adding an element of strategy and choice to the game.

AUG, also known as Bullpup, is a rifle that has become an integral part of the Counter-Strike game series, exclusively intended for counter-terrorists. Created by the Austrian company Steyr Mannlicher, this rifle first saw the light in 1977 and was adopted by the Austrian army within a year. Its futuristic appearance immediately caught attention. In the early versions of the game, the Steyr AUG A1 was modeled, but with the release of Global Offensive, the weapon underwent changes reflecting the more modern Steyr AUG A3 model.

Equipped with a medium-powered scope for more accurate shooting at medium distances, the AUG allows players to enter aiming mode using secondary fire. However, switching to another weapon or repressing secondary fire takes the player out of this mode.

The AUG features moderate rate of fire, comparable to the AK-47 and M4A1-S, as well as moderate damage. In Global Offensive, this rifle is capable of dealing fatal damage to a player with full health and helmet with one shot to the head at close range. However, damage decreases over distance.

The AUG boasts high accuracy and moderate recoil, especially for the first shot when aiming. Using the scope in previous versions of the game increased the upward movement of the crosshair but decreased firing rate and increased recoil. In Global Offensive, when aiming, the player's view magnifies by 3 times, increasing accuracy while reducing the player's movement speed.

The popularity of AUG among new players is explained by its ease of use - "aim and shoot". In competitive matches, it is used alongside the M4 due to its high accuracy and damage, despite its higher price and longer reload time.

AUG is the primary weapon for bots that prefer sniper rifles but do not use scopes. Bots that usually choose sniper rifles also prefer AUG over Krieg 552/SG 553.

In the battle for control on the game field, the ability to tactically use weapons becomes the key to victory. For those holding central positions, AUG can be the perfect ally, providing necessary control alongside excellent firepower. If AWP is not affordable for you but you still need a powerful rifle, AUG will be an excellent alternative.

However, before investing in AUG, it is wise to first acquire the M4. If you manage to achieve good results with M4, then investing in AUG will be justified and help strengthen your positions. By managing money and choosing the right positions, with AUG, you can easily score points on the CT side.

In older versions of the game, due to the lower rate of fire, headshots were more preferable as the recoil when firing without aiming did not shift the crosshair as much as in Global Offensive.

AUG is more suitable for holding positions than M4. It is excellent for controlling long or open positions but risky in fast and short battles. If you need to hold a narrow position alone, it's better to take FAMAS and grenades. Buying AUG becomes impractical if you constantly die with it.

In Global Offensive, AUG may deal slightly less damage to unprotected targets, but thanks to its good armor penetration, it becomes the only assault rifle capable of killing with one shot to the head at close range.

Burst fire is impractical unless you are at close range or holding a favorable position while aiming.

Reload strategically, as AUG's reload time is noticeably longer, especially in Source and Global Offensive, where it is the longest among rifles.

In the history of AUG rifles' development and use in Counter-Strike, there are several interesting moments and peculiarities that may surprise even experienced players.

In Counter-Strike: Source, for example, there was an inconsistency in the detailing of the AUG bolt. The lower part of the bolt, without edges, could be seen through the weapon model. Moreover, when the bolt was pulled back, it actually "hovered" slightly higher than it should. These minor flaws, although not affecting gameplay, added their share of strangeness to the world of Counter-Strike.

It is also interesting to note that in Counter-Strike: Source, the magazine did not appear in the weapon until the player "clapped" it to secure it. This was not present in GoldSrc Counter-Strike games, which could cause some confusion among veterans.

Additionally, in Counter-Strike: Source, the caliber designation of AUG cartridges on the HUD was incorrect, indicating a caliber of 7.62x51mm, while in reality, it uses 5.56x45mm. This discrepancy detail was corrected in Global Offensive, however, there were still inaccuracies: game files also incorrectly indicated the caliber as 7.62 instead of 5.56.

Before the advent of Global Offensive, in all versions of the game, AUG was known as Bullpup, indicating its special design, where the mechanism and magazine are located behind the trigger. The optical sight for the AUG A1 model was called the Swarovski sight, while for the AUG A3 in Global Offensive, the Trijicon ACOG sight is used.

In real life, AUG is usually equipped with a transparent magazine that shows the number of remaining rounds. In the game, however, this magazine always seems full, regardless of the number of rounds in it. This was probably done to save resources, which is typical for other types of weapons in the game as well.

Interestingly, in one of the Global Offensive updates, the rate of fire when aiming was halved, and then in the next update, it was increased again. Additionally, changes to the scope, including the color of the dot when zooming, also sparked interest among players.

These details and features only add extra color and interest to the Counter-Strike gaming world for its dedicated fans.
