Overview
The Riot Shield, once referred to as the Ballistic Shield and exclusive to Danger Zone, is specialized equipment for Counter-Terrorists in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Initially available only in Hostage Rescue mode from the May 7, 2019 update, it later became accessible in Casual mode for Hostage Rescue with the Operation Riptide update on September 21, 2021.
Gameplay Mechanics
The primary function of the Riot Shield is to provide bullet protection for the player. When bullets hit the shield, they are completely blocked, preventing any player damage. However, repeated bullet impacts will gradually wear down the shield, eventually leading to its destruction. The damage inflicted on the shield by each bullet is calculated using the formula: Base Damage * Penetration Power.
Key points regarding shield usage include:
- The shield is only susceptible to damage when equipped by a player; it remains intact if dropped.
- Melee attacks bypass the shield entirely, causing direct damage to the player.
- When not in use, the shield is carried on the player's back, offering rear protection from bullets.
- Equipping the shield prevents the player from using their weapons, as it occupies both hands.
- The shield provides frontal protection but leaves the sides and viewing slot vulnerable.
- Carrying the shield imposes a speed penalty, reducing the player’s speed to 200 units per second, regardless of the weapon equipped.
- Actively using the shield further reduces the player’s speed to 170 units per second.
- Players can perform a bash attack with the shield when it is equipped.
Purchase Details
Previously, the Ballistic Shield used in Danger Zone had a different model lacking face protection. This earlier version left the head exposed, but the current Riot Shield covers the face, exposing only the ankles and feet. Additionally, the shield's health was increased from 650 to 800.
The Riot Shield can be bought from the Buy menu under the heavy section for $1100.
