After nearly a decade of development, the long-awaited sandbox RPG, Hytale, has been officially canceled, and the development studio Hypixel Studios will cease operations in the coming months. This announcement was made by the studio's CEO and co-founder, Aaron "Noxy" Donaghey, citing technical difficulties and the inability to realize the game's ambitious vision as the main reasons.
The announcement was made by Hypixel Studios CEO and co-founder Aaron "Noxy" Donaghey in a heartfelt address to fans and the team. Referring to insurmountable development challenges and the inability to fulfill the game's original concept, Donaghey confirmed that both the project and the studio would be closed in the coming months.
“This is not the outcome any of us—at Hypixel or at Riot—wanted,” said Donaghey in an official statement. “But after years of pushing forward, adapting, and exploring every possible path, it became clear we couldn’t bring Hytale to life in a way that truly delivered on its promise.”Aaron "Noxy" Donaghey
Hytale was initially conceived as a Minecraft-inspired sandbox with RPG elements, featuring procedural world generation, mod support, and deep role-playing mechanics. Development began back in 2015, and after its public announcement in 2018, the game quickly gained popularity among players — the trailer garnered over 60 million views. The project was positioned as a new milestone in the genre, combining block-building creativity with structured adventures.
The development was fraught with challenges — including a complete reboot of the game engine and increasing technical complexity, which repeatedly led to delays. Although the team considered options for scaling down or setting new deadlines, it was ultimately decided that such compromises would strip Hytale of its essence.
“It wouldn’t have been the game we set out to make. And it wouldn’t have been the game you deserve,” Donaghey explained.Aaron "Noxy" Donaghey
Riot Games attempted to find investors or buyers who could continue the project, but no deal was reached. With rising costs and limited progress, the decision was made to completely halt development.
The closure of Hypixel Studios was a result of this difficult decision. Meanwhile, Riot Games assured that they would provide generous severance packages and employment assistance to affected employees, reportedly over 70 people.
“Riot supported us through thick and thin,” said Donaghey. “They’re ensuring our team is supported with resources to help them find what’s next. It’s not just thoughtful — it’s human.”Aaron "Noxy" Donaghey
This is just one in a series of closures that have swept through the gaming industry during 2023–2024, with many studios facing cutbacks.
Despite the studio's closure, the popular Hypixel server in Minecraft, which inspired the creation of Hytale, will continue to operate as it functions separately from Hypixel Studios.
As for the gaming community itself, especially those who were anticipating the game's release or saw potential in it — they are disappointed and upset. Yet, at the same time, not very surprised. According to many participants in discussions on Reddit, games that call themselves "spiritual successors" or "replacements" for Minecraft are doomed to fail, as creating something entirely new — like Minecraft — and adding something that isn't already there or can't be implemented through mods is challenging.
According to some commentators, including those who previously worked on the game's development, several internal team issues — including leadership, frequent production process restarts, and more — were the biggest problems in working at the company and creating the game.
Although Hytale will never officially release, its impact on the sandbox community and the aspirations of its developers are undeniable. In conclusion, Donaghey expressed sincere gratitude to the game's dedicated fans and highlighted the importance of this project for the industry.
“Even though we won’t be the ones to bring this game into the world, we still believe in what it stood for and in the incredible potential of this genre.”Aaron "Noxy" Donaghey
This announcement was a bittersweet moment for both fans and developers — a reminder of the challenges even the most promising projects face.
