Marvel Rivals Success Fails to Prevent Layoffs
Marvel Rivals has quickly become one of the most talked-about live-service games of the year, attracting a dedicated player base and generating significant revenue. Given its success, few would have expected NetEase to suddenly pull the plug on part of the development team. However, reports suggest that the company may be withdrawing its investments from North America entirely, possibly explaining the decision.
Thaddeus Sasser himself confirmed the layoffs in a recent LinkedIn post, revealing that he and his team were let go. Additionally, former level designer Jack Burrows also spoke about the situation, commenting on social media that he "couldn’t dodge that big boot I guess, no matter how big the success of the gig."

A Worrying Trend in the Gaming Industry
The layoffs come at a time when job security in the gaming industry is increasingly unstable. Throughout 2024, an estimated one in ten game developers were laid off, with even major studios like Tango Gameworks facing sudden closures. The Marvel Rivals team’s situation only reinforces the harsh reality that even working on a highly successful project does not guarantee job stability.
Bungie cinematic director John Ebenger speculated that NetEase’s decision might be part of a broader shift in its business strategy, potentially signaling a complete exit from the North American market. However, without an official statement from NetEase, the true reasoning behind these layoffs remains speculative at best.

What’s Next for Marvel Rivals?
While the core development team in Seattle has been let go, Marvel Rivals itself remains active, and NetEase is likely to continue supporting the game. However, the loss of key developers raises questions about its future content updates and ongoing support. Fans have expressed concern that this decision could impact the game's quality, especially given how instrumental these developers were in its success.
For now, Marvel Rivals players can only hope that NetEase has a solid plan in place to maintain and expand upon the game’s success. But one thing is clear, if even a thriving game like Marvel Rivals isn’t safe from corporate restructuring, no title or development team is truly secure in today’s volatile gaming industry.
