Ubisoft has a new game in the R6 Siege universe underway, but not a FPS game, but rather a turn-based tactical strategy game in the XCOM style. The game has yet to be officially announced, but insider Tom Henderson has already published a write-up in Insider Gaming, basing his reporting on sources close to the project. This is a completely new interpretation of the well-known universe, so the new release is especially interesting for fans.
Rainbow Six Siege has long held the status of one of the most popular competitive tactical shooters with millions of players worldwide. Ubisoft's attempt to rethink gameplay in a strategy format is a bold move and potentially a new milestone for the entire franchise.
A Franchise with a Rich Past
The Rainbow Six brand has long been identified with tactical realism and close team interaction. The most recent big game, however, deviated from this and was met with a chilly reception, prompting Ubisoft more or less to abandon supporting it. On this background, the announcement of a new game in the same universe is perceived as a bid to rethink the IP's treatment and revive it.
Tactics, Strategy, and Cinematic Experience
According to the insider, the project currently has no public name but is being developed as a turn-based tactical game with a top-down view — similar to XCOM. Players will be able to control familiar operators from Rainbow Six Siege, using their unique abilities in various missions: from hostage rescues to building assaults.

The gameplay will echo the spirit of the original Rainbow Six Siege but with elements of tactical planning, where operators must be selected based on the mission. Developers are aiming for a campaign duration of 25–30 hours. It is noted that the final duration may change depending on the inclusion of cutscenes and other content.
The game is being developed for modern platforms — PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A port for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is also being considered. The release might occur within the next one to two years.
One source, speaking with Insider Gaming, described the project as: "Just look at XCOM gameplay — it's something like an updated version with cinematic cutscenes and a modern approach." Interestingly, development is in the hands of Ubisoft's internal team, but a few employees believe the project could be handed over to a new Ubisoft business entity in collaboration with Tencent, since it technically is within the realm of the Rainbow Six IP.

The announcement of this game's development means Ubisoft is keen to innovate with one of its strongest franchises, not restricting itself to traditional methods. For players, this is a chance to see the familiar universe from an entirely different angle. Considering the failure of Extraction, the new strategy could not only rehabilitate the brand but also be an important step in the evolution of the entire Rainbow Six lineup.
