Valve released an update for CS2 and explained the reason for players losing packets

On November 12, 2024, an update was released for Counter-Strike 2 that affects the network quality of the game and interaction with network settings. Players will now be able to get more detailed information about the quality of the connection during the game, which will help them better understand and solve problems related to lags and delays.

Changes to the display of network quality

The main change concerns the HUD telemetry setting, which now more accurately measures how the network affects the gameplay. A new detailed network quality display mode has been added, showing raw data on packet loss and latency fluctuations (jitter). The new indicator also takes into account only those network events that negatively affect the gameplay.

Eliminate previous problems

The update addresses previous issues where “bad” packets were counted based on loss or out-of-sequence. Previously, the measurement method did not take into account jitter, which significantly affected the gameplay, although the indicator showed stable network operation. After the introduction of the new methodology, many players mistakenly thought that they had packet loss because the quality indicator had deteriorated dramatically.

Explanation of packet loss

Valve has explained the reason for the “loss” display in telemetry after the Armory update. Previously, players complained about the high level of “loss” in telemetry, which reached more than 20%. As it turned out, the packet loss rate displayed in the game was fictitious and included even those packets that did not affect the gameplay. After players reported that they changed providers or equipment to eliminate the allegedly high packet loss rate, Valve corrected the display. Now the “loss” indicator only takes into account those events that really negatively affect the game, providing more accurate information for users.

Improved latency compensation during firing

In addition to changes in telemetry, the developers have improved latency compensation during shooting, especially for those players who use the “Buffering to smooth over packet loss/jitter” setting. This will allow you to respond more effectively to lags during intense moments of the game.

New network quality indicator and user support

The developers explained that the quality indicator now takes into account only the negative impact on the game and reflects only real network problems. This innovation will allow players to quickly identify the causes of lags and apply the appropriate settings.
