Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame Boss Guide

In Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree, there are so many bosses that it might seem like they never end. But that's the beauty of the game; it offers players numerous challenges that test their skills, different builds, and battle scenarios against bosses with interesting mechanics, each requiring a unique approach from the player. In this guide, we'll break down another optional boss in the Elden Ring DLC—Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame Location

To find the boss Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, you need to head to Midra's Manse in the Abyssal Woods area. This optional dungeon in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC becomes accessible after descending from Shadow Keep past a painting that hides a secret passage on the lower levels of the fortress. You’ll need to climb into a coffin to transfer from Shadow Keep to the lower parts of Scadu Altus, leading to the Abyssal Woods.

Upon reaching Midra's Manse, you will face a true challenge in the form of secret passages hidden by paintings and various enemies that won’t let you pass easily to the boss. Your first checkpoint will be the Manse Hall, Site of Grace. From there, head left until you see a bright golden painting, which you need to attack to reveal a secret passage.

This tunnel will lead you to a ruined library, where you will find the Midra's Library Site of Grace. Here you’ll see another painting depicting Midra and Nanaya. Strike this painting to reveal a path with a ladder leading to a lever. Pull the lever, then descend to the main library and go left to find the newly opened area.

Continue moving through this path, bypassing several rooms filled with enemies, until you reach the Second Floor Chamber Site of Grace. The enemies you encounter will primarily use ranged attacks, allowing you to avoid direct confrontations, provided your character has sufficient endurance. Once you hear piercing screams, you can be sure you are close to Midra. Nearby the boss room, there will be another Site of Grace.

Preparing for the Battle with Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame

Before starting the fight with Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, ensure you are ready for battle. First, replenish your health supplies, resources, and various consumables that may come in handy. Make sure your Scadutree Blessing is at least level 10 or higher. Since Midra can easily kill you in a few hits, this item will help reduce incoming damage and increase the damage dealt.

Holy damage is quite effective against this boss, so it’s worth using weapons with quick casting skills or applying Holy Grease to inflict holy damage.

As with most bosses, a build that inflicts bleed damage is one of the most effective, considering Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, is even more susceptible to this effect than other enemies.

Consider using weapons that inflict bleed, such as Bloodhound’s Fang, Morning Stars, or Bloodfiend’s Arm, which combine bleed damage with stamina damage. Abilities and spells that fire projectiles can also interrupt some of Midra’s attacks.

During the battle, the boss will use some negative effects, such as Frenzied Flame’s madness, which can be mitigated with talismans or equipment that increase focus—a stat that boosts resistance to madness.

Choose light equipment that provides resistance to debuffs but allows you to move easily, dodge enemy attacks, and be faster than with heavy equipment. However, primarily rely on your play style.

Regarding talismans, we recommend the following types to aid you in battle:

  • Clarifying Horn Talisman +2: Increases focus by 180, significantly enhancing resistance to madness.
  • Flamedrake Talisman +3: Found in the DLC, this talisman greatly increases resistance to fire damage, which is very practical in the second phase of the fight against Midra.
  • Two-Headed Turtle Talisman: Significantly increases stamina regeneration, necessary for dodging, blocking, and attack frequency.

Don’t forget about spirits that can assist you in battle, acting as tanks or distracting the boss.

  • Black Knife Tiche: Uses Weapon Art that deals gradual damage from Black Flame, effective against bosses with high health.
  • Jolan and Anna Ash Spirits: Distract enemies and complement bleed-based builds well.
  • Mimic Tear: Creates a copy of yourself that can help distract the boss and break boss poise more frequently.

How to Defeat Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame in the DLC

The encounter with Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, begins with a sort of zero phase. Entering the boss arena, you’ll see a frail old man barely standing. You need to attack him until you deplete his health completely. A cutscene will follow, then the true battle begins as the boss transforms into his powerful fiery form.

At the start of the phase, you have a little time to summon a spirit for assistance or do so behind the boss while he performs his first attack. Remember, Midra’s attacks inflict madness and fire damage, so avoid getting hit. Some of the boss's attacks are slow, so dodging them with rolls shouldn’t be too difficult.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame focuses on physical attacks with his sword, performing three spinning attacks. Since they deal physical damage, they can be blocked.

Some boss attacks allow you to stay behind him and deal damage, so take advantage of this opportunity, roll behind the enemy, and maximize your chance to land a few hits.

When Midra’s health is low, his attacks become faster and more aggressive, sometimes reaching a five-hit flame combo. A spirit can help reduce pressure on you by distracting Midra, with the bonus that the spirit is immune to madness.

First Phase of the Battle with Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame

At the start of the fight, Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, releases several fire shots from his head. At this moment, it’s best to stay close to the boss, standing behind him, and rolling as needed to avoid the fire stream. During this time, you can land a few hits on the boss.

After this, Midra performs several swings with his sword, dealing physical damage. The swings are quite slow, so dodging them shouldn’t be an issue, but be aware that the attack radius is large. After this, the boss will have a brief pause; use this window to attack the enemy.

Another attack by Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, is a punch followed by a series of quick sword strikes, ending with a forward lunge that leaves a fiery trail.

Midra can also perform spinning attacks while moving. Initially, the boss performs three slow swings, the last of which is the slowest, then transitions into a series of three quick spinning strikes. If you watch the boss's movements and behavior carefully, you can recognize the start of this move.

Another attack by Midra is a "harpoon" attack. The boss seems to hover slightly, tilting parallel to the ground, and makes a sudden forward thrust.

Second Phase of the Battle with Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame

The second phase with Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, begins when his health drops below 60%, marked by a new move. Midra soars high into the air, charging with fiery flames, then crashes to the ground, causing a massive explosion on the battlefield that leaves fiery trails on the arena. As soon as you see the boss performing this move, move as far away from the epicenter as possible to avoid the explosion.

All previous phase attacks remain unchanged, so remember that Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame, can combine new attack types with the old ones.

The boss also gains the ability to launch a firebomb in front of him, which explodes in a medium radius a second after appearing. This is a mini version of the massive fire explosion at the start of the phase.

His swinging attacks are now imbued with fire, which covers the ground at the point of impact. At this moment, roll to Midra’s side to get behind him and avoid the attack.

When you’re at a great distance, Midra can quickly close the gap by jumping towards the player and striking with his sword, followed by golden spikes emerging from the ground. Timing the roll to go under Midra and moving away from the impact zone to avoid the spikes is essential, then take advantage of the opportunity to land a few hits from behind.

Among the new boss attacks are fire clumps that hit the small area where the player was standing and a similar attack where radiant clumps strike forward, hitting the entire area ahead from the boss to the player. The third type of radiant attack is a powerful fire beam that Midra charges and releases directly at the player.

With patience and focus, you can defeat Midra and obtain the Memory of the Lord of Frenzied Flame and 410,000 runes.
