The Chinese tournament VCT 2024: China Kickoff concluded on March 2, with EDward Gaming emerging victorious over FunPlus Phoenix with a score of 3-1, securing their sixth consecutive victory in the national competition.
On the first map, Breeze, EDG controlled the game from the start, earning 7 rounds on defense, but FPX managed to claw back 4 rounds in the latter half. Thanks to BerLIN, who secured two quad kills at crucial moments, turning the tide. However, EDG didn't relent and pushed the game to overtime, ultimately securing the first win.
On the second map, Split, EDG overcame an anti-eco round thanks to stellar play from player Smoggy and won 5 rounds in a row. Later, FPX equalized the score, but EDG regained the advantage, winning a round after losing 3 out of 5, and then confidently dominated, capturing the map with a score of 13-6.
On the third map, Icebox, which was new for both teams, FPX employed an unusual tactic with two duelists and two controller agents. But on defense, EDG aggressively attacked and held forward positions, winning 4 rounds in a row. Later, EDG tied the score 6-6, but FPX regained confidence and won the map with a score of 13-8.
On the fourth map, Ascent, FPX chose a lineup with Jet and Yoru, while EDG opted for a lineup without Viper. FPX started on defense and won 5 rounds in a row thanks to their active playstyle. But EDG gradually made a comeback and leveled the score to 6-6. In the end, EDG triumphed with a score of 16-14 in a long-fought battle and became the champions of VCT 2024: China Kickoff.
With their victory, EDward Gaming secure the first three championship points of the season. Soon, we will see both these teams at Masters Madrid, which kicks off on March 14.
