After years of waiting, Grinding Gear Games' Path of Exile 2 has finally gone into early access. It takes the lauded Action-RPG formula of the original and refines it, with some innovative features. With a partial campaign, new overhauled systems, and captivating endgame content, this early access is indeed going to be an exciting sneak peek into Wraeclast's future.
New Classes and Ascendancy Choices
The Early Access version is going to introduce six playable classes, with the returning Witch and Huntress of the original game, joined by the new Warrior, Monk, Mercenary, and Sorceress. Each class starts in a distinctive location within the shared Passive Skill Tree to reflect their specialty. This means meaningful early game progression is assured, making each class unique in concept for build creation.
Ascendancy subclasses have been overhauled; each class in early access has two options available, with a third planned for full release. The Sorceress, for example, has to choose between the Elementalist, which augments elemental magic, and the Chronomancer, who messes with time. These add a layer of depth and strategic variance, which caters to both new players and veterans.
Campaign and Progression
The early access campaign features three acts, taking about 25 hours to finish on the first playthrough. To reach the maximum level of 65, players will have to replay those acts at higher difficulties nod, in a way, to the traditions of the original Path of Exile. This is quality over quantity, laying the foundation for future acts to complete the story.
New Passive Skill Tree, Systems Overhaul
The Passive Skill Tree has undergone an iconic revolution. While still very large in scope, it has become far more accessible with new keystones and simplified start areas. Compared to the original, the Passive Tree in this expansion now features 831 additional nodes, indicating roughly 62.7% growth in node number. Such expansion allows much finer character customization and opens many more avenues for unique builds. Challenges, such as the Sekema's Task and Master's Trial, now form part of the ascendancy progression. They give great rewards and skill points at completion.
Endgame Content
Early access to Path of Exile 2 features an endgame that is one of the real highlights. It comprises seven different systems based on a reworked Atlas mechanic where players can explore randomly generated dungeons, fight complex bosses, and gain permanent character upgrades. Grinding Gear Games plans to gradually reintroduce seasonal mechanics to keep the endgame dynamic and engaging.
Monetization and Player Support
Access to early build access is provided via supporter pack purchases from $30 to $480, depending on the premium option desired. These packs include in-game currency, cosmetic items, a t-shirt, and physical rewards that reward these fans for their dedication by funding its development.
Summary: A New Era for the Genre
Early access to Path of Exile 2 strikes a masterful balance between respect for the legacy of its predecessor and a drive toward new horizons. It has a lot of complex mechanics, engaging content, plenty of fun, and a solid foundation for players. This game looks set to grow and be one of the best in the genre as more acts and features are included in release timelines.
