The Korean organization GenG Esports is disbanding the Valorant team

Today brought sad news for all fans of the Korean organization Gen.G Esports. Representatives announced via their Twitter account that they are disbanding the current Valorant team. The reason apparently being the team's poor performance and lack of substantial results in 2023.

The organization announced the Valorant team in May 2020 and started their journey from the tier-3 scene. In 2021, the team successfully participated in the first stage of VCT 2021: North America Masters where they finished in 3rd place. The following season passed without significant achievements, as the team did not take part in any tier-1 events. The most productive year was arguably the current one, 2023, during which Gen.G Esports ranked 17-32nd at VCT 2023: LOCK//IN São Paulo, and 4th in the VCT 2023: Pacific League regional competitions. The major disappointment for the organization came during the Last Chance qualifiers where the team secured the 3rd place, consequently not receiving an invitation to Valorant Champions 2023.

Last lineup of Gen.G Esports

  • Lee "k1Ng" Seung-won
  • Yu "TS" Tae-seok
  • Yeom "eKo" Wang-ryong
  • Ko "Sylvan" Young-sub
  • Kim "GodDead" Sung-sin
  • Kim "Meteor" Tae-O
  • Chris "Elmapuddy" Tebbit (coach)
  • Lee "bail" Sung-jae (coach)

The organization warmly said goodbye to the players, posting a photo of each of them and writing a short story about their achievements and best moments. Most of the players have already announced that they are looking for a new home and thanked the past team. Particularly interesting was the narrative of coach Elmapuddy, who stated that a large part of the team's failures rested on his shoulders, due to the failure to overcome the language barrier.

When GenG moved from North America to Korea, I knew it was going to be a challenge but I am glad I took the opportunity. However, since my contract was ending in the near future, retiring made no sense. We tried, but because the team spoke Korean, I just couldn’t get the effect I wanted. Thank you, GenG.

We would like to note separately that the last player - Meteor is not present in the exclusion lists, which may mean that the organization decided not to leave the discipline completely but to reform the squad before the upcoming season. Note that the off-season is a great opportunity for teams to make changes and try out new players, so possibly, we will see a new lineup of Gen.G Esports in the future.
