G2 Esports and controversial fall tactics at VALORANT Champions 2024

On VALORANT Champions 2024 held last month in Korea, the team G2 Esports found herself at the center of controversy due to her unconventional tactics on the Abyss map. In an interview with SpikeTalk, team coach JoshRT spoke about the reasons for this decision.

During the match against Leviathan G2 Esports decided that she couldn't win the eco round on the second map and opted for a massive fall from the map at the beginning of the round. This strategy avoided giving the enemy credits for kills and points for ultimates. However, streamer Lothar criticized this move, calling it “disrespectful to opponents and tournament organizers”. Controversy over this issue erupted on social networks.

JoshRT explained that the inspiration for this strategy came from Lothar, who played heavily on the Abyss map in Early Access. According to him, Lothar expressed the idea that “on such a map everyone will fall”, which prompted the team to decide to fall in the second round.

The coach noted that the team analyzed various scenarios and realized that they did not want to give the enemy additional ultimates in the following rounds.

The statistics show how low the winning percentage of defenders is in the eco round of the second round.
he added

JoshRT also expressed his desire for players to take risks and fight, even in the eco round, but admitted that it was he who suggested the fall tactics to them, which influenced their decision. This moment, according to the coach, will remain in the memory forever.
