Agent skins in Valorant – What they are and whether they’ll appear in-game

There are currently 27 agents in Valorant, each with unique abilities and designs. However, the characters' appearance has remained unchanged since their release. Because of this, the Valorant community believes that the game is sorely lacking in skins that would change the established design, and the developers at Riot Games regularly hint at this. So today, we have prepared some material for you in which we will explain what agent skins are in Valorant and whether they will appear in the game.

What are agent skins?

First, let's figure out what this term means. Agent skins are an additional feature in Valorant that allows players to change the design of a particular character. It should work similarly to weapon skins, where you can choose the appearance you want to see in the game when you purchase them. An example of this is the fan work of the author uberchain, who modeled what skins for the agent Jett could look like in different designs.

Will agent skins appear in Valorant?

It is safe to say that agent skins will appear in the game sooner or later, but unfortunately, there is no exact release date yet. The fact is that since 2021, Riot Games has been regularly hinting at skins to players, but none have been released yet. Below, we have compiled all the mentions and comments that the Valorant community considers to be hidden teasers for future skins.

Official videos and images

In early 2022, the official Latin American account, VALORANTLATAM, posted an interesting video on its X account (Twitter at the time). It shows the agent Reyna wearing a dark purple evening gown, which differs from her appearance in the game itself.

The Valorant community immediately assumed that this was a teaser for a future skin for this agent, but there were no official comments. A month later, Valorant released the then-new Act 4 Episode 2, and along with it, the official Instagram account published artwork from Riot artists. In it, you can see agents Sage, Neon, and Jett trying on different outfits.

The Valorant community considered this to be a hidden teaser for future agent skins, hinting that the new outfits in the images might appear in the game. However, it turned out that this was not an official teaser, but just simple images.

In this regard, one of the illustrators, Sean Marino, commented on the appearance of skins for agents. He said that fans of the game often ask about them, and discussions are ongoing, but everything must be done in such a way as not to disrupt the game's gameplay.

Yes, we constantly receive questions about agent skins. We don't want to give a categorical refusal right now. We are discussing this within the company, but first and foremost, we believe that we must act wisely and correctly so as not to disrupt the gameplay component of the game.

In 2023, the official Valorant account posted a new image. It shows agents Jett and Killjoy wearing unusual clothes, with the latter wearing a frog-shaped hat. Many people again assumed that this was another teaser for agent skins, and content creators on YouTube began making clickbait videos with titles such as “Agent skins officially announced” or “New skins for Jett coming soon.” But again, this was not an official announcement, just art to stir up the community's interest.

After a long period without any details, in 2025, the topic of agent skins began to be discussed again. This happened because the new Battle Pass, dedicated to Act 4 of Season 2025, featured a player card depicting Sage. It refers us back to the old image from 2022, which we wrote about above.

That is why players once again thought that 5 years after the game's release, Riot would finally add skins for agents, and the card serves as a new teaser. But as in previous cases, disappointment awaited them. Riot Games did not confirm the release of skins, and other sources denied it. Well-known content creator and data miner valohabercisi stated that the developers did indeed test skins for agents, but have so far abandoned the idea.

Regarding the recent rumors about agent skins, according to the information I have received, agent skins will not be released. Riot did try agent skins, but it caused some lag issues (due to the old game code), so they have abandoned the idea for now. If they solve this problem with UE5, they may reconsider their decision. In addition to this topic, I have heard that with the transition to UE5 this month, we will see more changes regarding skins.

Why doesn't Riot add skins to agents?

It's been five years since Valorant was released, but the developers still haven't added skins to any agents. There are probably two main reasons why the company hasn't done this: optimization and an outdated game engine.

  • When it comes to optimization, we can cite another game from Riot as an example — League of Legends, which has over a hundred unique characters with dozens of skins for each. But LoL is a representative of the MOBA genre, where FPS is not as important. In Valorant, on the other hand, you need to spot your opponents as quickly and clearly as possible, and adding skins for each agent could easily worsen the game's optimization and make it unplayable for players with weak PCs.
  • As for the outdated game engine, Valorant currently runs on Unreal Engine 4, which was released back in 2014. Therefore, adding any third-party features could easily break the game and create even more bugs. It should be noted that the transition to Unreal Engine 5 is currently underway, which is scheduled for the end of July 2025. Perhaps after that, developers will have more opportunities to add skins to agents.
