South America is the leader in the number of teams with a 0-3 record at the majors

A Reddit enthusiast under the nickname u/EphemeralLurker shared an interesting statistic according to which South America is the leader in the number of teams that finish the group stage at the majors with a 0-3 result. The author analyzed all the majors since 2018, when the modern competition format was introduced, and came to conclusions that show the trend for the region.

South America is among the outsiders

Over the past five years, South America has consistently lost at least one team with a 0-3 record. This figure has become a “hallmark” of the region, especially among Brazilian teams. For example, teams such as Imperial, Fluxo and 9z Team often fail to produce decent results.

Comparison with other regions

According to the stats:

  • South America (AM): 8 out of 41 teams (19.5%) finished the tournament with a 0-3 record.
  • Europe and CIS (EU/CIS): only 8 out of 96 teams (8.3%).
  • Asia Pacific (APAC): despite being less represented, 4 out of 23 teams (17.4%) also finished the tournament with a 0-3 record.

Thus, South America is well ahead of the other regions in terms of the frequency of teams going winless. In comparison, the Asian region also shows poor competitiveness, but their tournament participation remains significantly lower.

Imperial

At the current Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024, the trend continued, with Imperial Esports from South America already finishing with a 0-3 record, confirming the statistics of recent years.

Recommendation for pickems

The author of the post on Reddit adds that when picking a team at 0-3 in their pickems, the safe option is usually a South American team. For example, Brazilian teams have consistently made this list since 2018.

South American teams continue to be an important element of tournaments, but their results in the group stages remain a serious problem for the entire region. Will they be able to reverse this trend in the future? Time will tell.
