Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster Adds More NPCs and Major Upgrades to Bring Towns to Life

So, the Guerrilla Games team is back with the Horizon: Zero Dawn remaster, but now the crew from Nixxes is helping out, and they shared some cool stuff on the PlayStation blog. The big news? Loads of new NPCs coming in hot.

The key update is that villages and camps will be much more lively, with random NPCs just walking around, doing their thing, not just standing there to give you quests. Brian van Nunen from Nixxes explained that with the PS5's extra memory, they could bump up the number of NPCs. Now they’re doing all kinds of activities, like one lady feeding geese near a well—yep, they even repurposed animations for that.

But it’s not just about NPCs. The blog also talked about foliage upgrades—trees and plants look more dense and realistic, closer to the original concept art. Snow and sand will react to your movements, not just in the Frozen Wilds expansion, but everywhere in the remaster.

On top of that, they added 10 more hours of motion capture for better, livelier conversations—closer to what we saw in Forbidden West. They used a bunch of tools (Python-powered, no less) to handle thousands of mocap files, updating conversations and animations to make everything smoother.

Oh, and lighting has been improved, both in the world and in cinematics, and character models got more detail. Aloy even has peach fuzz on her face now. Plus, now both she and her companions react to weather—whether it’s too hot or cold, you’ll notice.

And yep, feeding the geese is officially a thing.
