Potions in Minecraft are bottled substances that, once consumed or used on, grants the entity a specific effect. It can be found in an igloo basement, dropped by killing witches and brewed by using a brewing stand. Here is a list of things that you need to start brewing.
Brewing Equipment
- brewing stand = a block to brew potions
- water = obtained from any water source nearby like rivers, sea, cauldron- to fill glass bottles, making water bottles
- blaze powder = used as fuel for the brewing stand
- glass bottle = to store water and potions
Base Ingredients and Modifiers
Base ingredients are items that are added into water bottles, creating the starting point of all potions (nether wart, fermented spider eye). Nether wart is the most crucial ingredient, as it makes the base potion to almost all potions.
Modifiers, on the other hand, are items used to change a potion’s properties or its form (redstone dust, glowstone dust, gunpowder, dragon’s breath). Redstone dust will extend a potion while glowstone dust will enhance one. You can't add both to the same potion. Also, enhancing can involve a trade off, where the potion is upgraded but has shorter duration.
- nether wart = used to make a base potion, that makes most potions
- fermented spider eye = infused in potions to make corrupted potions
- redstone dust = infused in potions to extend the duration of the potion’s effect
- glowstone dust = infused in potions to increase the level of the potion’s effect
- gunpowder = infused in potions to make splash potions
- dragon’s breath = infused in splash potions to make lingering potions
Effect Ingredients
Effect ingredients are used to change the effect that a potion has.
- sugar, rabbit’s foot, glistering melon slice, spider eye, pufferfish, magma cream, golden carrot, blaze powder, ghast tear, turtle shell, phantom membrane, cobweb, slime block, stone, breeze rod
How To Use a Brewing Stand

The brewing stand interface has 5 empty slots. The three bottom slots are meant for input /output like water bottles and potions. The top slot is where the base ingredients, effect ingredients and modifiers should be placed, to produce different potions. The left slot is specifically for the blaze powder which powers the stand, like fuel is for furnaces. When put in any of the three bottom slots, the input changes in its slot to become the output, the desired potion.
List Of All Minecraft Potions (2025)

Base Potions
Base potions are made by adding an ingredient into a water bottle. They do not have any effects. Only one base potion (awkward potion) is usable to make most effect potions in the game.
Base potion | Base ingredient | Potion's uses |
Awkward Potion | Nether wart | Can be infused with an effect ingredient to make most effect potions |
Mundane Potion | Any effect ingredient excluding pufferfish, golden carrot, turtle shell and phantom membrane | No uses |
Thick Potion | Glowstone dust | No uses |

Effect Potions
Effect potions are made by adding an effect ingredient to an awkward potion- excluding the Potion of Weakness and corrupted potions. There are three different types of effects that all potions can have. Positive effects, negative effects and mixed effects. Once drunk/used, potion particles will appear around the entity for the potion’s duration. Each potion’s particles’ colour corresponds with the potion’s colour itself.
*A corrupted potion is a product of certain potions infused with fermented spider eye. This results in a potion that is an ‘opposite’ of the pre-corrupted poison. Potion of Invisibility, Weakness, Harming and Slowness are corrupted potions.
Positive Effects
Potions with positive effects give a generally positive effect, even if it’s not in your favour. For example, witches are known to consume positive-effect potions like potion of Swiftness while attacking you with negative-effect splash potions.

Splash Potions
Splash potions are potions that can be thrown onto a block/entity and explodes within impact, affecting nearby player/mobs. Any potion can be made into a splash potion. To make splash potions, gunpowder is added to an effect potion.

Splash potions have a range of 8 blocks, if thrown at the best angle. When the potion directly hits an entity, the entity gets full duration and potency of the potion’s effect. A splash potion lasts the same as its drinkable form.

Lingering Potions
Lingering potions are a variant of splash potions that can be thrown onto the ground/block, creating a lingering area that has the effect of the potion- affecting any entity that passes through it. All splash potions can be brewed into lingering potions. To make them, dragon’s breath is added to a splash potion.

After it is thrown, a cloud made out of the potion’s potion particles forms on the affected area, with a radius of 3 blocks. This lasts for 25-30 seconds and the cloud decreases to nothing in that time. For potion effects with a duration, the cloud will give the effect of one-fourth of the drinkable form's duration. On the other hand, for potion effects with no duration, the cloud will give the effect of half of the drinkable form's potency.

- Poisonous potato oil = gives the Poison effect for ten seconds and the it’s very slippery effect
