The combat system in Death Stranding 2 has become somewhat more powerful than in the previous installment, meaning your gear and weaponry play a bigger role in skirmishes. Among the various ammunition types, MP rounds stand out. If you've just started the game and don't quite understand what makes them special or why they don't work on all enemies right away — you're not alone. Let's break it down simply and clearly.
MP rounds appear early in the game, especially noticeable when you acquire the Assault Rifle [MP] Lv1. Although the game doesn't explicitly explain the abbreviation "MP," most players and fans agree: it stands for Multipurpose. This unofficial name fully reflects their nature — these rounds are effective against almost any threat: humans, machines, and BTs.
Because of this, MP rounds are an excellent choice for those who don't want to constantly switch weapons during combat. One rifle loaded with MP rounds can handle most situations. However, these rounds don't reach their full potential immediately.
At the start of the game, MP rounds are effective against humans and mechs. So, if you're dealing with MULEs or mechanical enemies, you can confidently use this weapon right away.
But there's one caveat. MP rounds don't affect BTs — those ghostly entities that wander the world — until you complete a key task: Order No. 005. In this mission, you need to deliver the MP Rounds Prototype to the Former Geophysics Research Lab. Only after this will all your MP weapons gain anti-BT properties, allowing you to fight these creatures with regular firearms.
It's important to understand: during the mission itself, the MP rounds prototypes are cargo, not ammunition. If you encounter BTs during delivery, you'll need to rely on Blood Grenades or other combat options.
One of the main features of MP rounds is how they affect different types of enemies.
Against humans, MP rounds are non-lethal. This is important because in Death Stranding, using lethal force can have serious consequences, such as causing voidouts or negatively impacting the storyline. MP weapons allow you to neutralize opponents without killing them — a safe and effective option for dealing with MULEs and other humans.
However, against BTs, the situation changes. After completing Order No. 005, MP rounds become lethal to these entities. The game even allows you to almost immediately test this new property in practice.
Despite the power and flexibility of MP rounds after they're fully unlocked, they aren't always the best choice in every situation. Blood Grenades remain highly effective against BTs, especially where area damage or quick crowd control is needed. Keeping a few of these grenades in reserve is a smart decision, particularly in dense or unpredictable zones.
