Scammers gain access to Valorant user data through email

Yesterday, the Brazilian Twitter account KINGDOM LABORATORIES, which specializes in insider information and datamining, reported a new type of scam. The channel representative informed that users receive a fraudulent email disguised as coming from Riot Games.

According to KINGDOM LABORATORIES, users might receive an email that looks very much like those sent by Riot Games, so users typically click on the link immediately. After this, using phishing techniques, the scammers obtain passwords and other user data, which can lead to serious fraud-related issues.

KINGDOM LABORATORIES also shared what to do if you receive such a fraudulent email.

If you receive an email from Valorant or any game associated with Riot, never open it directly. Copy the link and open it in the incognito mode of your browser and proceed there. If asked to log in, simply close the tab.

However, if you did open the fraudulent email and entered your data, you need to take several steps and ensure that criminals don't have access to your social media and game accounts.

  • Change passwords. Before anything else, change the password of your Riot account and any other critical accounts (email, bank accounts, etc.). Use a strong, unique password for each account.
  • Check your accounts. Make sure there are no suspicious activities on your accounts.
  • Disable password auto-save in Chrome. It might seem convenient, but it can also be a vulnerability if someone gains access to your browser.
  • Implement two-factor authentication where possible, especially for your primary accounts.
  • Stay vigilant. In the future, always check links before clicking on them, even if they seem familiar.
  • Inform Riot. Notify Riot Games about this incident so that they are aware and can potentially help others avoid similar situations.
