Vertigo's Decline in Competitive Play: Is It Time for a Change?

Vertigo, once a staple in the competitive Counter-Strike map pool, has seen a significant decline in play at recent tier-1 tournaments. Across the last three major events, the map has been played only three times:

  • IEM Dallas 2024 — 1 map
  • BLAST Spring Final — 0 maps
  • EWC 2024 — 2 maps

This trend raises questions about the map's relevance and whether it's time for Valve to consider changes. Players and teams might be avoiding Vertigo due to its unique verticality and complex strategies, which could be less appealing compared to other maps.

Potential Replacements for Vertigo

Cache: This is a popular map that has been part of the mappool in the past. It has a good balance between open spaces and narrow corridors, allowing for a variety of tactics.

Cobblestone: This map was also popular in the past, but was removed for rework. After some updates, it may become interesting for players again.

Tuscan: One of the classic cards that has recently returned to the attention of players. It offers interesting dynamics and opportunities for strategic play.

Train: A classic map with great historical significance for Counter-Strike. Train offers unique gameplay opportunities due to its long sightlines and complex structure with wagons.

The decline in Vertigo's popularity suggests it might be time for a change in the competitive map pool. Introducing new or revamped maps like Tuscan, Cache, Cobblestone, or Train could rejuvenate the scene and provide fresh challenges for teams and players.
