After MOUZ’s opening win against Falcons at IEM Cologne 2024, we spoke to Brollan about MOUZ’s struggles in arenas, picking Vertigo against Falcons, and his career revival since joining the German organisation.
A good win over Falcons to start off IEM Cologne, how are you feeling?
Very good, we played really well today. They got a lot of pistol rounds and first gun rounds so it was difficult to play, especially on Vertigo and Ancient.
Vertigo is your lowest win rate map, what made you pick it against Falcons?
We know we are good at it, the stats don't show it, but we lost twice against Complexity on it who are one of the best in the world, so we still think it's a good map for us.
Why do you think you struggled to win the pistol rounds and first gun rounds?
I think pistol rounds can be random sometimes, but that's an easy excuse to say. With the first weapon rounds, we were maybe just lost at the start of the halves and it's something we need to improve over the tournament or it will cost us a lot of rounds.
Do you feel like you needed to warm up throughout the series considering Falcons have already played three BO3s?
I think we're warmed up because we had a bootcamp and good practice before, but I don't know. Sometimes we just have really close games at the start of tournaments, it was the same in Katowice and at the RMR, it's always been like that. Hopefully, it'll get better from here, but we always need to improve in how we're playing.
You've been on MOUZ for a while now and playing well the whole time, do you feel like the move to MOUZ rejuvenated your career?
My motivation has never been bad, but joining MOUZ who are a top team gives you more motivation to win. They are very talented guys, it was easy to come into the group, so my motivation has always been clear. I think maybe it was a case that it didn't work out with some teams previously, but this is working really well and the teams fits me well.
Sometimes MOUZ don't look like the same team in arenas compared to studio events, why do you think that is?
We don't have the experience, we just need to get more experience on stages. I don't think we struggle that much, sometimes we just play against FaZe and they're basically our nemesis, especially in the last season.
We played G2 at the Major and things happened on stage and we couldn't 100% focus on stage, so it's been a bad year on stages. Playing FaZe on a stage, they have the experience and they're always annoying to play against, but if we play another team other than FaZe then it could be another thing. Although maybe it wouldn't even be the same with FaZe now they are struggling.
If it wasn't FaZe and it happened in more arenas, at what point would you look at it as an issue that needs to be overcome?
We just need more experience, but I think we're hungry to play in front of crowds. When we play on stage, I don't think we're worse at communications, we just sometimes poorly execute things and that has cost us many of the games.
