Mikyx about G2 Esports at Worlds 2024: "If we were good, we would have already won the first two series, like HLE and T1"

G2 Esports returns home after a painful defeat at the Worlds 2024. The team was eliminated in the Swiss Stage, losing to Bilibili Gaming. It's especially difficult as this has happened before, with G2 also falling to BLG at the same stage last year.

In an interview with Sheep Esports, Mihael "Mikyx" Mehle shared his thoughts on this defeat, noting that it was one of the best chances for victory, but the team again failed.

"We could have won this tournament"

Despite successes in Europe in 2024, G2 was unable to deliver strong results on the international stage. According to Mikyx, they played much worse in the tournament than they could have. "I think that especially in the series with T1 and HLE, we did not show our best game. Even against Weibo, we won more because they were weaker than us, not because of our good play," Mikyx admitted.

He also added that their defeat was partly due to an unfortunate tournament bracket, but ultimately the team was unable to utilize its potential: "On paper, it seemed unlucky for us, but if we can't beat BLG, then maybe we didn't deserve to go further."

Draft mistakes and missed opportunities

During the tournament, G2 faced teams like HLE, T1, Weibo, and BLG. One of the most controversial decisions was picking the Orianna and Nocturne combination in the first match against BLG, which had already failed before. Mikyx explained that they didn't want to give this combination to the opponent but ended up being unprepared to execute it themselves: "We were simply too bad at using this combo. Instead of creating opportunities, we were praying the opponent would make a mistake."

Additionally, Mikyx confessed that draft mistakes and the fear of experimenting led to their loss: "I think we could have picked other champions instead of Nocturne. We respected the opponents too much, even though they had already chosen a jungler."

Last chance and fatal errors

Despite the failure in the first match, G2 managed to gather themselves and win the second. The third match was very close, but several mistakes, including the decision to go for Nashor, led to their defeat. Mikyx commented on this moment: "This is my biggest mistake in this series. We should have turned the fight instead of trying to take Nashor. They had no flashes, and we could have killed them if we played it differently."

The future of G2 is in question

Summing up the year, Mikyx called 2024 a failure for G2, despite victories in Europe: "Winning in Europe is good, but it's not enough. We needed to show results on the international stage." He also hinted at possible roster changes: "I would be surprised if everything stays the same next year. Repeating the same thing three times in a row is not an option."
