In the playoffs of the Esports World Cup 2025, G2 Esports took revenge on Bilibili Gaming, eliminating the Chinese team with a score of 2:1 and advancing to the tournament's semifinals. This defeat marked a painful end to the two-year international rivalry between the teams. Bilibili Gaming player Zhao "Elk" Jiahao, in a post-match interview, attempted to explain the reasons for their failure and thanked fans for their support.
This is interesting because Bilibili and G2 have been facing off in major tournaments for years, with the Chinese team previously coming out on top — for example, in the upper bracket final of the Play-In at the MSI 2025, where BLG confidently won 3:0. However, at the Esports World Cup, things turned out differently.
At the beginning of the interview, Elk admitted that the team simply fell short against G2's level of play:
I think we just played worse than G2.
When discussing the choice of champions in the decisive third map (Kalista and Renata), Elk explained that the team did not see a problem with this draft:
I don't think Kalista with Renata affected the outcome. It was a good choice within our meta. We just poorly executed it in the game.
Despite the painful loss, Elk expressed gratitude to the team's fans, especially those present at the arena in Riyadh:
I want to thank all the fans. Of course, it's sad to lose and stop at this stage, but we are grateful for your support and will try to perform better next time.
The Esports World Cup 2025 is taking place from July 16 to 20 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Teams are competing for a prize pool of $2,000,000. You can follow the matches and tournament results via this link.
