According to a fresh Bloomberg report, Warner Bros. Games has pulled the plug on an unannounced Hogwarts Legacy expansion that was scheduled to drop late 2025. The DLC would've launched alongside a "Definitive Edition" bundle for newcomers, while existing players could've purchased the expansion separately.
Warner Bros. bigwigs reportedly killed the project after deciding the DLC's content simply wasn't substantial enough to justify whatever price point they were considering. Instead of slashing the price, they opted to scrap the whole thing as they continue trimming costs across their gaming division.
Sources close to the project revealed that Avalanche Software (Hogwarts Legacy's main developer) was collaborating with Rocksteady Studios on the expansion. The DLC would've reportedly resurrected content that got cut from the original game, including a storyline focused on one of the companion characters.
This cancellation is just the latest in Warner's ongoing gaming restructuring. Back in February, they shut down three studios including Monolith Productions (the team behind Shadow of Mordor), and canceled their in-development Wonder Woman game.
These cutbacks follow a brutal stretch of underperforming titles including Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions (which quickly faded after launching last September), Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and MultiVersus. The reshuffling apparently extends to the executive suite too, with Bloomberg reporting that Games Division President David Haddad is negotiating his exit from the company later this year.
The good news for Potter fans? The full-blown Hogwarts Legacy sequel remains in active development at Avalanche. Warner Bros. has repeatedly stressed that the Wizarding World franchise is crucial to their gaming future, with execs calling the sequel "one of the biggest priorities" for the company.
That commitment makes perfect business sense considering the original game has moved over 34 million copies since launching in 2023, making it one of gaming's biggest commercial successes ever. It's still regularly popping up on monthly sales charts, showing there's plenty of ongoing demand.
The DLC cancellation fits with Warner's stated strategy of doubling down on their biggest franchises – mainly DC, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter. Industry insiders claim that within the DC universe, they're primarily interested in Batman games, with Rocksteady reportedly in early development on a new Arkham title that's still years from release.
The Hogwarts Legacy community isn't thrilled with the news, especially since many players have been hoping for substantial DLC since the game launched. Last summer's update added some new bits and pieces, but nothing close to the story expansion many were craving.
With the sequel still early in development and likely several years away, canceling this DLC means a lengthy wait before players can return to the Wizarding World in a meaningful way.
Warner Bros. declined Bloomberg's request for comment on the situation, but their focus on fewer, bigger games suggests they're putting their resources toward the full sequel rather than expanding the original hit.
