Splitgate 2: Official Gameplay Trailer for the Open Beta Reveal

Splitgate 2 has officially opened the multiplayer arena for players worldwide — today marks the launch of the open beta on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, blending classic team battles with a unique portal traversal system — and it's already attracting attention with a host of new features, modes, and map creation tools.

What's New in the Splitgate 2 Beta

The open beta showcases many key elements of the game's final version: over 25 types of weapons, several game modes, and "The Lab" — a powerful map and mode editor that allows players to create, share, and play custom-generated content. This advanced tool was previously featured in trailers.

The fan-favorite Takedown mode returns — a team mode where tactical kills reduce ally respawn times and increase them for enemies. The winning team is the one that simultaneously eliminates all opponents. Players can also compete on Stadium 2.0 — an updated version of one of the original game's most famous maps — or engage in massive battles on new maps for 24 players in the Onslaught mode, adding even more chaos.

While Splitgate 2 lacks a single-player campaign, the game expands its narrative universe through digital comics available via the Splitgate 2 Companion App. The events take place in a futuristic league across several planets, where players join one of three factions — Aeros, Meridian, or Sabrask — each offering unique abilities and gear that influence gameplay strategy.

The signature portal mechanic, combining Portal series physics with Halo-style combat, remains a central element of the game. In Splitgate 2, it's enhanced with the “auto-triple portal” system, simplifying entry, exit, and combat maneuvers. Despite the creativity of the portal mechanic, critics note that other aspects — from the class system to weapon design — appear less innovative and draw comparisons to genre giants like Call of Duty and Halo.

Hunt the Devs Event in Splitgate 2

Beta participants can also join the special Hunt the Devs event, known from the alpha. If you manage to defeat a developer from 1047 Games (recognizable by their fiery disco ball skins), you'll earn a unique "Dev Killer" cosmetic item for your faction.

Community Reaction to the Splitgate 2 Beta Test

Technical issues overshadowed the initial hours of the beta test: some players complained about long queues, matchmaking problems, and connection issues. 1047 Games has already acknowledged these difficulties and promised improvements by the full release.

Despite the shortcomings, Splitgate 2 has already received positive feedback for its dynamic battles, creative mechanics, and open potential. With the promise of another big surprise to be revealed at the 1.0 release, players have a solid reason to stay engaged — and keep their portals open.

The Splitgate 2 beta clearly demonstrates a commitment to refining the formula of the first installment while offering more tools for creativity and community interaction. Whether this will be enough to stand out among the numerous competitors in the genre remains to be seen.

The Splitgate 2 open beta is now available. Interested players can register on the game's official website and start their intergalactic shooting today.
