Senior Software Engineer at GIANTS Software Eddie Edwards shared details about the advanced ground deformation simulation system in Farming Simulator 2025. Thanks to improved physics, ground deformation in the game will depend on various factors.
According to Eddie Edwards, ground deformation in FS25 depends on the surface type, moisture, vehicle weight, and movement speed. Hard surfaces like asphalt won't deform, whereas mud and snow will compress differently, especially in high humidity conditions.
Heavier tractors with wider tires will leave deeper tracks, particularly at lower speeds. This combination of factors creates the feeling that the ground responds individually to each machine.
Players will be able to experience real feedback from the surface, feeling every rut and trace as their tractor moves over uneven terrain. In-game handling will become more challenging on tracks or wet surfaces, and tire choice will now impact performance under different conditions, adding even more detail to the realism in Farming Simulator 2025.
Plowing truly showcases the deformation features in FS25, as plows create real furrows that affect tractor handling. Tracked vehicles handle uneven surfaces better, highlighting the benefits of thoughtful equipment selection.
The soil deformation system in Farming Simulator 25 uses a high-resolution mesh of 12.5 cm, which generates a massive amount of data. To optimize this, a "sparse" density map is used, recording deformation only where it occurs, reducing memory usage.
FS25 also introduced the Density Processing Unit (DPU) to speed up data handling with optimized code, ensuring smooth game performance even with detailed terrain.
Terrain detail has been increased to 0.125 meters, four times more than previous versions. A dedicated collision system ensures smooth interaction between vehicles and surfaces, significantly improving physics without sacrificing performance.
The quadtree mesh system maintains high detail near the player and reduces it at a distance, preserving visual quality while decreasing computational load.
The ground deformation system in FS25 adds unparalleled depth, from strategic equipment choices to captivating visual effects, redefining realism in farming simulators. This feature enhances not only the visual appeal but also the core gameplay, making FS25 the most engaging and realistic simulator in the series.
With this information, it becomes clear that the developers have paid great attention to what might seem like a minor detail – ground deformation. But in reality, it points to a major technical breakthrough in the physics of the video game industry, details of which may appear in other games, making them more detailed and realistic.
