Amazon MGM Studios has officially acquired the rights to adapt Split Fiction — the co-op hit from Hazelight Studios that was released in March 2025. The lead role in the film will be played by Sydney Sweeney, with Jon M. Chu set to direct. Chu is best known for Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights.
After a fierce bidding war that included Sony and several other studios, Amazon MGM Studios secured the deal for over $2 million. The screenplay will be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind Deadpool & Wolverine. The film will be produced by Story Kitchen in collaboration with Electric Somewhere, Jon M. Chu’s production company. Sydney Sweeney will also serve as an executive producer on the project.
Oskar Volontis from Hazelight Studios expressed the team's confidence in the film adaptation:
“Even in the early stages of development here at Hazelight, it was clear just how much potential Split Fiction had to become an amazing film. Now we know it has the chance to become something truly special, thanks to such an incredible creative team. Jon M. Chu, Sydney Sweeney, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick — along with Story Kitchen — have been passionate and true fans of this project from day one, and we can’t wait to see their vision come to life!”
Split Fiction is a co-op adventure game where two authors, Mio and Zoey, find themselves trapped in imaginary worlds of their own creation. Players switch between sci-fi and fantasy settings, using each character’s unique abilities to solve puzzles and navigate platforming challenges. The game received critical acclaim and sold over 4 million copies within two months of release.
Although no release date has been announced yet, the film is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime Video. Given the scope of the project and its star-studded team, a theatrical release is also a strong possibility. This marks the third film adaptation of a Hazelight Studios game, following It Takes Two and A Way Out, which are also currently in development.
Amazon MGM Studios is investing in yet another major video game adaptation. Split Fiction promises to be a standout example of how a creative game can evolve into a compelling film. With the success of the game and the involvement of stars like Sydney Sweeney and Jon M. Chu, the project has every chance to become a hit.
