We all have the ability to get tired after a hard day’s work or any physical activity, and in this regard, even Sam Porter from Death Stranding 2 is no exception. Under the burden of endless deliveries, back-and-forth walks, and other tasks during his journey, he gradually loses his stamina and endurance, which need to be replenished. If you don't know how to restore stamina in Death Stranding 2, this guide article will explain all the ways we know of.
Like in many games, the main character of Death Stranding 2 has his own attributes and stats that determine his abilities and capacity to withstand the obstacles of this world and indicate his resilience for survival. Two such interrelated stats are stamina and endurance.
How Stamina Works in Death Stranding 2
Stamina is passively affected by several factors, including: cargo weight, steep slopes, temperature, hunger, thirst, injuries, stress, illnesses, nighttime, etc. Once stamina drops, Sam won’t be able to run and dodge, and he might drop cargo.
How Endurance Works in Death Stranding 2
If both gauges drop to a minimum, Sam may fall, lose balance, or even faint. Cargo can get damaged or lost, and escaping from enemies becomes nearly impossible. That’s why it’s crucial to know how and when to restore stamina and endurance.
To recover, you don’t necessarily have to return to base. Sam has several ways to recuperate right during his journey.
Drinking Water from the Canteen
The canteen automatically fills with rainwater or river water, turning it into drinkable water. To drink, open the gear wheel with the right D-pad button on the gamepad, select the canteen in the lower right sector, and press the corresponding button to drink. This is the fastest and most convenient way to recharge stamina without stopping.
Sitting Rest
At any point during the journey, you can hold down the square on the gamepad for Sam to sit. In this position, he can relax a bit, stretch his shoulders, or even take a nap. This slowly but steadily restores the hero’s stamina. However, it’s best not to do this in dangerous zones — especially near BT.
In Safe Houses and Distribution Centers, you can enter a Private Room, where stamina and endurance are fully restored. Inside, energy drinks, a shower, food, and gear management are also available.
Energy Drinks
Next to Sam’s bed in the room, there are always energy drinks. Each increases stamina by 10%, up to a maximum of 25%. Before a long journey, it’s worth drinking a few cans. The effect is temporary, but it can be a lifesaver in tough situations.
Food and Sleep
Besides drinks, ensure that Sam eats and sleeps regularly. If you neglect rest, stamina recovery will slow down, and Sam will tire quickly. The better rested he is, the longer he can go without stops.
Unlike stamina, endurance doesn’t have a direct way to be instantly restored. It replenishes passively — when Sam stops or moves slower. Standing, crouching, or leaning on a stable surface, Sam slowly restores this gauge.
A more effective option is hot springs scattered around the world, where Sam can also spend time resting. They fully restore both stamina and endurance. If you come across such a place, don’t miss the chance to take a break. Plus, it provides a temporary morale boost.
Another way to reduce endurance expenditure is to redistribute cargo. A balanced backpack and dropping excess cargo significantly lower depletion rates. Upgrading the exoskeleton — especially the supportive type — which reduces the consumption of both resources, is also beneficial.
