Game of Thrones Kingsroad: All classes explained

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most anticipated RPGs, transporting players back into the brutal and politically twisted world of Westeros. First announced during The Game Awards 2024, this open-world action RPG allows players to forge their own path through the Seven Kingdoms and they won’t be doing it alone. The game features three playable classes, each inspired by iconic figures and combat styles from the Game of Thrones universe.

While full details remain under wraps, the official website and teaser trailer offer our first glimpse into these classes and how they’ll shape gameplay. Here’s a breakdown of all three classes announced so far in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad.

The Knight

Weapon: Longsword
Playstyle: Balanced, Defensive, Tactical
Inspired by: Jaime Lannister, Jon Snow

The Knight class channels the noble warriors of Westeros, think gleaming armor, unwavering loyalty, and deadly precision with a blade. With a focus on refined swordplay, this class is all about calculated strikes, defensive counters, and disciplined technique. If parrying and timing-based mechanics are your thing, the Knight might be your best bet. What sets this class apart is its dedication to order and honor. Though the game hasn’t revealed any faction or house-allegiance mechanics yet, it’s easy to imagine Knights pledging their swords to noble causes or navigating dialogue with a strict code of chivalry.

Ideal For Players Who:

  • Prefer a balanced, traditional melee style
  • Want tactical depth in their swordplay
  • Are drawn to the classic fantasy archetype of a loyal warrior

The Sellsword

Weapon: Two-Handed Axe
Playstyle: Heavy, Aggressive, Crowd Control
Inspired by: Khal Drogo, Tormund Giantsbane

For those of you more into mindlessly hacking away at foes rather than being graceful and smooth, the Sellsword is your class. Not one to shy away from name-calling, Sellswords are similar to Barbarians which are intertwined with the ‘wildlings’ and the Dothraki’, due to their merciless nature. Sellswords use two-handed axes, and while such weapons are slower to swing, the amount of cleaving power is phenomenal. Wreaking havoc, specialties include area of effect cleaving attacks and Sellsword Charge, unleashing unparalleled destruction unto opponents. While the name Sellsword brings to mind the mercenary lifestyle of someone like Bronn, this class is much closer to melee violence without charm or cleverness. Expect this class to dominate when you’re bombarded with giant monsters or mounds of lesser enemies during boss fights.

Ideal For Players Who:

  • Want to play a raw, damage-dealing powerhouse
  • Enjoy tanking and cleaving through multiple enemies
  • Favor high-risk, high-reward melee combat

The Assassin

Weapon: Dual Daggers
Playstyle: Agile, Stealthy, Precision Strikes
Inspired by: Arya Stark, Faceless Men

The Assassin class is a natural option for those who enjoyed Arya Stark’s character arc in Game of Thrones since it is flexible, requires a high level of stealth, and is deadly. According to the developers, these rogues engage in dance-like combat, wielding double daggers which hints towards a fluid, combo-centric style of fighting. Although stealth mechanics are still a mystery, it can be assumed that this class will focus on evasion, accuracy, stealth, and sneak attacks. As an Assassin, you will maneuver either vanishing into the darkness or springing into battle with lightning fast strikes, implementing a quieter style of combat than other classes in the game.

Ideal For Players Who:

  • Love fast, high-skill gameplay with dodges and combos
  • Prefer stealth and subterfuge over brute force
  • Are fans of rogue or ninja-like classes in other RPGs

Who to choose?

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is still keeping its cards close to the chest when it comes to character progression, role-playing choices, and class-specific storylines. But from what we’ve seen so far, each class not only draws directly from the world’s lore, but also offers a unique playstyle:

  • The Knight is about discipline and honor.
  • The Sellsword is about raw power and brute dominance.
  • The Assassin is about speed, stealth, and surgical precision.

Whether you’re donning the armor of a noble warrior, unleashing fury as a mercenary, or striking from the shadows like a Faceless Man, Kingsroad is setting the stage for epic adventures in a post-Red Wedding Westeros.
