G2 is making reasonable step with SunPayus & sAw signing, but this is not enough

G2 Esports is making a smart decision by going after Álvaro "SunPayus" García and Eetu "sAw" Saha from HEROIC. According to a report by Sheep Esports, the Spanish AWPer and Finnish coach have reached a verbal agreement to join G2 after the BLAST.tv Austin Major. The transfer is waiting on confirmation from Valve and BLAST.

After losing Nikola "NiKo" Kovač to Falcons and Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov shortly after, G2 needed to do something. SunPayus is impossible to fill m0NESY’s shoes completely, but he brings strong AWP skills, experience, and consistency — all things this team needs right now.

The great first step

He has been one of HEROIC’s best players in 2025, helping the team win MESA Nomadic Masters Spring, qualifying through the Europe MRQ, and taking the CCT Global Finals. He’s in great form and ready to step up.

Along with him, sAw is expected to replace Wiktor "TaZ" Wojtas as G2’s head coach. TaZ was under heavy criticism for being more of a motivational figure than a real tactical leader. Clips from tournaments made him look like more of a cheerleader than someone offering in-depth help. Fans weren’t impressed.

sAw, on the other hand, built solid teams during his time at ENCE and HEROIC, working with Marco "Snappi" Pfeiffer and later Damjan "kyxsan" Stoilkovski — both strong in-game leaders (IGLs). He brings real tactical value and a sharp eye for talent — something G2 desperately needs in this rebuild phase. Even now, the less experienced Linus "LNZ" Holtäng has reached a different level under the Finnish coach.

The move gives sAw a much bigger budget to work with and talented players like Mario "malbsMd" Samayoa and Nikita "HeavyGod" Martynenko, who are ready to take the next step. But while SunPayus and sAw are great additions, there’s still one big hole left: G2 doesn’t have a strong IGL.

Right now, Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski is calling the shots, but he’s not the long-term solution. He’s experienced but not consistent enough to lead G2 back to the top. sAw is used to working with strong IGLs, and it’s hard to imagine he’ll settle for anything less.

So who could take that spot?

huNter-?

One idea is to let Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač take over the IGL role. He’s been part of the team for a long time, knows the structure, and has the respect of the roster. But it looks like he doesn’t want to do it. At IEM Dallas 2024, it was NiKo leading, not huNter-, which shows he might not be interested in taking on that pressure. While he has the potential to be a solid IGL, it likely won’t happen unless the team has no other option.

siuhy?

Kamil "siuhy" Szkaradek could be a great pickup if things don’t work out at Liquid. He’s young but already experienced, has led international rosters, and knows how to build synergy with up-and-coming players. If G2 can convince him to switch, it would be a long-term investment. But the question is: if G2 really wanted siuhy, why didn’t they sign him earlier? It’s possible that opportunity has passed, unless Liquid underperforms and opens the door.

ztr (GamerLegion)

Erik "ztr" Gustafsson has slowly built himself into a reliable IGL at GamerLegion. He reads the game well, has shown leadership growth, and can play under pressure. But there’s a catch: GamerLegion is trending upward and might soon be stronger than G2. That could make him less likely to leave unless G2 can offer a very clear plan and better long-term potential.

s1n (M80)

Elias "s1n" Stein is another young IGL who already had a shot at the big stage with BIG. While it didn’t work out then, he has matured and improved. He leads with structure and plays well individually. G2 could be the place where he gets a second chance, but it would still be a gamble — the step up from M80 to G2 is huge, and the pressure is much higher. Also he has an advantage of working and properly using malbsMd in his most suitable roles.

npl (B8)

Andrii "npl" Kukharskyi has shown good individual form and is gaining more IGL experience with B8. He’s another player who was tested at a higher level with NAVI but couldn’t quite maintain his spot. Still, he’s young and could grow under the right system. If G2 wants to take a risk on raw potential, npl is a valid option, but it may take time to pay off.

For now, the SunPayus and sAw deal is a great first step. G2 finally looks like a team with direction. But to become a real contender again, they need to find the right IGL — and that’s the piece that will decide whether this rebuild works or not.
