At the VCT Americas 2025 Kickoff tournament in the U.S., Evil Geniuses secured their first win of the season. After losing their opening match against LOUD, the team bounced back with a convincing 2-0 victory over FURIA in the lower bracket's first round. In an interview with Insider Gaming, team star yay shared his thoughts on the tough years of his career, his progress, and his plans for the future.

"I'm not back yet, but this is a big step forward"

During the match against FURIA, yay made extensive use of the Operator, despite Astra rarely being paired with this weapon. According to him, this strategy was suggested by coach potter, as Astra’s ability to deploy smokes across the map helped yay hold key positions and create space for his teammates.

When asked about returning to his peak form, yay admitted that he’s not quite there yet:

I'm not fully back yet (laughs). But if the team keeps improving and I work on my weaknesses, I can regain full confidence. The win against FURIA is an important step forward.

 

The Goal – International Stage and Confidence Restoration

Speaking about his immediate objectives, yay emphasized that the main goal is to qualify for an international tournament and return to the level of play he showed two years ago.

I've regained some confidence already, but now I need to prove it to myself. The minimum goal is to make it to an international event.

 

He also reflected on the challenges he has faced over the past two years:

It’s been a tough period. Not long ago, I was at the top of the Valorant scene, and then suddenly, I stopped winning. It was a hard hit, but I’ve accepted the situation and learned from it. Now, I’m only looking forward.

 

"I used to rely on others' opinions—now I focus on myself"

According to yay, one of the biggest lessons he has learned during this time is that external expectations shouldn’t affect self-worth.

I used to care too much about what the community thought, but now I understand that the most important thing is focusing on myself. It’s crucial to know what really matters and to change what needs to be changed, with the support of the people closest to you.
