In many video games, players want to make their characters look unique and cool in their own way to satisfy their inner aesthete or to show off to others. World of Warcraft is no exception. This game has a lot of beautiful equipment that you want to get as soon as possible. But not always a good-looking item will have practical value, as its characteristics may be disappointing, making the character weak. However, WoW has a whole system called transmogrification that allows players to satisfy both points: to look great and still be strong.

What is transmog in World of Warcraft?

Transmog, or transmogrification system, is a mechanic in World of Warcraft that allows you to change the appearance of a player's equipment while maintaining all the properties of both weapons and armor. This way, you can customize your character's appearance using fragments of individual pieces of equipment that you collect throughout the game.

The term transmogrification itself means the ability to transform or change under the influence of magic or mystery. In World of Warcraft, when talking to other players or reading various articles, you may come across other names, such as T-mog, or mogging.

The transmogrification system was added to World of Warcraft with the release of the Cataclysm expansion, which was the beginning of a new activity in the game and more and more set collectors started to appear. Therefore, dungeons, raids, and PvP became even more popular, where you could get the reserved equipment. Since this mechanic was introduced only after patch 4.3, players of WoW Classic versions can't change the appearance of their items.

Where can I find items for transmog?

As soon as a player selects an item that can be used for transmogrification, they will receive a notification in the chat that the item has been added to your collection. To view all transmog sets or individual items, go to the menu bar called Collections. You can also use the SHIFT-P keyboard hotkey to do this. Then go to the Appearances tab. 

Here you'll be able to see all the available items for changing the appearance separately. All items are grouped into separate categories: head, shoulder pads, back, pants, etc. By hovering over some items, you can read where you can get them. But this does not work with all items, so to find out how to get the item you need for your set, it is best to use the appropriate websites. 

In the Sets tab, you can see which items from a set you have in stock and which ones you don't. You can also filter them based on where they came from or use the search box if you know the name of an item. The availability of sets does not prohibit you from being creative and combining different elements of items from different sets to create the kind of gear you prefer.

Found transmog parts are saved not only for the current character, but also for other characters available on your account.

Transmogrification rules

• Transmog items of all rarities are added to the transmog collection: from common gray items to legendary and unique items.

• Some items are added to your collection as soon as you pick them up. While others require you to equip them first.

• Only the types of equipment that match your class are added to your transmog collection. That is, if your main type of armor is chainmail, then only such equipment will be added to the transmogrification list.

• Class sets can only be used for transmogrification on other characters of the class to which they belong, regardless of the type of armor. However, it works differently with weapons — all types of weapons you find will be added to your collection.

However, it should be noted that with the release of World of Warcraft: The War Within, there will be no restrictions on the type of armor. Therefore, in the future, players will not have to separately farm a certain type of equipment for a particular character.

Where can I find items for my transmog collection?

The easiest way to get new items for transmogrification is to kill mobs that drop items and complete quests. However, such items usually don't have any stunning looks. In order to get a fantastic and unique set, you need to try hard. And you will come across some excellent items in the later stages of the game.

The best items will drop out for completing raids, dungeons, killing rare and unique NPCs. Some of them can be too difficult to complete on your own, so it's best to gather in a group with other players who are also interested in the same type of activity as you.

For winning PvP, you can get a special token that can be exchanged with some merchants for certain equipment sets.

If you like the look of one of the other players, you can take a closer look at their set and find out what the item is called, so you can go and try to get it yourself.

The main thing to remember is that it is not an easy task to get the right item. Each item has its own frequency of appearance. It took some players years to fully collect a cherished set or at least one of these items.

If you don't have the desire or time to try to get a set yourself, you can always try to find it at an auction. Players have long developed their own system of economy in the game. If someone has an interesting item or a set of equipment that they no longer need, you should expect that they will sell it at an auction. Usually, such items are quite expensive, and therefore you will have to farm a lot of gold to have at least some chance of buying that set before someone else buys it.

With the release of the Dragonflight expansion, players now have the opportunity to buy transmogs directly from special merchants without purchasing equipment.

You can also buy some sets in the official Blizzrard store for real money. Their prices vary depending on their rarity and popularity. If you can afford to buy an item for real currency, this option will be the easiest for you.

How to Transmog in WoW

In order to change the appearance of an item, you first need to find a suitable NPC who can perform transmogrification for you. You can usually find them in some cities. The most popular and convenient are the NPCs in Stormwind — Alliance, and Orgrimmar — Horde. However, there is another interesting way to perform transmog, namely with the Grand Expedition Yak mount. You do not have to have it in your possession. You can use another player's animal. However, you should be careful, as the mount and its owner may leave, and you will not have time to complete your transmog.

To transmog sets and individual items, in the corresponding window, you simply select the desired body part on which you have the item you want to change. Then select the type of equipment you want to assign to it from the list. Each part can be changed to your liking, including the shoulder pads on the hero, which can also be modified individually. Once you've created the look you like, you can save all your changes and go on with your adventure.

Transmogrification Tips

Do not neglect your professions in WoW. With the skills of a tailor or blacksmith, you can create simple, yet useful items of equipment that you may like in the early stages of the game. Therefore, stocking up on a pair of pants, shirts, or armor will help you add several types of looks to your collection that can be used for early transmog.

Even if you're not a fan of PvP, try to play a few of them to be able to buy sets from some vendors, thanks to the tokens they give you.

As soon as you have enough gold to farm, it's a good idea to buy the Grand Expedition Yak mount. After all, in addition to this mount, you will get a traveling vendor, thanks to which you can sell junk and repair equipment. In addition, the app includes an NPC who performs transmog, which will make your transformations mobile, and you won't have to constantly spend time flying to cities.

Don't forget about auctions and Trading Post, where interesting and unique items will appear from time to time that you will like. So farm gold, accumulate it, and save to afford what you've been wanting for so long.

A combination of different sets will make your character's appearance unique, which will help set you apart from others, including those who use all the items from the same set.

Quests, dungeons, raids, and PvP are your main sources of transmog items. They are one of the main types of activity in the game, so go for it, and don't be upset if you don't get what you want.
