Ubisoft Unveils Future of Rainbow Six Siege: Marketplace, Subscription, and Return of Rarity

Content creator Kudos conducted an exclusive interview with Mohamed Benheneda, the Director of Business Strategy and Live Operations at Ubisoft, during the RE:L0:AD 2025 tournament in Rio de Janeiro. The discussion unveiled key details about the game's future: subscription overhaul, marketplace fate, skin rarity, and new ideas for in-game progression.

Skin Marketplace and Rarity Issues

A major focus of the conversation was the marketplace's impact on the economy and the value of skins. For instance, the return of rare items through the Celebration Pack raised concerns among some players worried about their devaluation.

With the marketplace now part of our ecosystem, we’re actively figuring out how to maintain the rarity and value of certain skins. We want to ensure that some items remain scarce and meaningful to the players who own them.
Mohamed Benheneda

Ubisoft acknowledges that the effect was stronger than expected, and the team is now looking for ways to maintain the uniqueness of items. The company is already testing limited drops and giveaways—and such events will become more frequent.

Subscription and New Forms of Value

Discussing the R6 subscription, Kudos noted that interest wanes after the first month—a sentiment Ubisoft seems to agree with:

A lot of players subscribe for the Battle Pass at the start of the season, but we’ve realized we’re not giving them enough reasons to stay engaged throughout. That’s something we absolutely want to improve moving forward.
Mohamed Benheneda

A revision of the content is on the horizon, including new forms of cosmetics like animated profile cards that debuted with the subscription.

Recolor Situation and Black Ice's Return

The interview also touched on the reuse of old skins. Some players criticize Ubisoft for "lazy" reworks, but statistics tell a different story:

Recolors might be divisive, but the data shows they’re popular — two of our top three selling bundles last year were recolors. Still, we know we need to put more effort into them, adding new textures, materials, and themes to make them stand out.
Mohamed Benheneda

In the future, the company intends to make such skins more thoughtful—changing not just color, but also materials, textures, and styles.

The "fatigue" from the legendary Black Ice was also discussed. Kudos admitted to selling it on the marketplace and no longer considers it unique. Ubisoft promised that in Year 11, new skins will be introduced to replace Black Ice as desirable and rare items.

Future of Progression and Rewards

Kudos raised an important question about operator mastery—a progression system allowing players to unlock cosmetics by frequently playing their favorite character. Ubisoft confirmed that such a mechanic is under discussion:

I don't have anything to say or announce right now that is concrete, but know that it is an ongoing discussion. Even internally, our dev team is really pushing us to seek something in that direction — because they're players too, and they want to showcase that they have their favorite operators and that they've mastered them. So at some point, I wouldn't be surprised if you see something along those lines — but nothing concrete for now.
Mohamed Benheneda

The company is also evaluating the balance of competitive currency (Comp Coins). Currently, it's only obtainable in Ranked and Siege Cup, but future adjustments are possible, especially with increased tournament frequency.

Kudos' interview with Mohamed Benheneda is not just a collection of interesting facts. It's a signal: Ubisoft is listening to players and ready to reconsider its approach to monetization, rewards, and cosmetics. If the promises made in the interview come to fruition in Year 11, Rainbow Six Siege is poised not just for a continuation—but a full-fledged second renaissance.
