Valve has announced the creation of a new tournament ecosystem for Counter-Strike 2, which will come into effect in 2025. This announcement has attracted the attention of players and tournament organizers, as the new rules promise to change the approach to organizing competitions.
The new rules, in particular, introduce the division of tournaments into rated and unrated, which creates new opportunities for teams of different levels.
Counter-Strike has always been one of the most popular esports disciplines, and the number of tournaments and participants is growing every year. However, the growing popularity of the game requires new approaches to the organization of competitions. Valve decided to implement changes to make tournaments more fair and transparent.
Previously, tournament organizers often used their own rules to select teams, which sometimes led to disputes and unequal conditions for participants. The new rules are designed to change this and provide equal opportunities for all teams.
Valve's new tournament ecosystem includes several key innovations:
- Tournaments will be divided into ranked and unranked tournaments. Non-rated tournaments will not affect the teams' ranking and can have a prize pool of up to $100,000. Organizers of such tournaments can use any convenient way to qualify teams.
- Rating tournaments will have two levels: tier-1 and tier-2. To participate in these tournaments, teams must go through the Valve rating system or qualification.
- Tier-1 tournaments will be able to invite teams based on global or regional rankings, and tier-2 tournaments will have an additional option to select by country or gender.
- Organizers can invite multiple teams if their team was ranked in the top 8 in the last 12 months or they won a tier 1 tournament. The total number of such teams in the tournament should be less than 20% (2 teams with 8 participants).
- Tournaments should be announced in advance: for tier 1 tournaments, the deadline for announcing tournaments for 2025 is September 1, 2024, for 2026 - January 1, 2025, then 2 years before the tournament; for tier 2 tournaments - 3 months before the tournament.
Valve's new tournament ecosystem for Counter-Strike 2 promises to make significant changes in the organization of competitions. It is aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for all teams and increasing the transparency of the participant selection process. Players and organizers are looking forward to the implementation of the new rules and hope that they will contribute to the development of the game at the highest level.
