YouTuber calculated Valve's earnings.
Redditor Fjedjik calculates the approximate number of cases opened in CS:GO every month. YouTuber Anomaly used his research to calculate Valve's earnings and the amount of money in the CS:GO market.
How many cases are opened per month
Data on the opening of cases vary from month to month, but if you calculate the average number, more than 21 million cases are opened per month. And this number already looks enormous. Players open about 714 thousand cases daily. Using this data, Anomaly calculated how many rare items appear on the market monthly.
Valve has long published the chances of dropping items from cases, and this information can be used freely. On average, about 139,000 items of "Classified" rarities appear in CS:GO per month, and approximately 55,000 knives and gloves. It's surprising how these items remain so expensive because there are vast quantities of them, but there are also a lot of players. Furthermore, approximately 10% of skins from this number have Stattrack technology, which makes them even more valuable.
How much does Valve earn on cases?
And if Fjedjik counted only the number of open cases, Anomaly went even further and calculated how much the developers get from this. It is impossible to calculate the entire amount because all cases cost differently, and the commission of the Steam Marketplace will vary from case to case. However, it is possible to accurately calculate the amount of money received from the sale of keys.
According to Anomaly's calculations, Valve earns about $1,786,271 daily from the sale of keys. And this is only for one day and only from the sale of keys. But in CS:GO, there are other means of monetization. For example, the commission of the Marketplace, the purchase of Prime, and various in-game items such as name tags, vaults, and capsules are not included in this sum, and it remains impressive.
How much does Valve spend on the pro scene?
It is worth reminding that during the whole year, Valve holds only two professional tournaments in CS:GO, and only during them fans can support the teams by buying capsules with stickers. Last year, IEM Rio Major 2022 and PGL Major Antwerp 2022 were held, the total prize pool of which was $2,250,000. Developers earn this amount in two days only from the sale of keys.
At the same time, team support requires almost no investment from Valve. The developers even earn from it. Teams get only 50% of sticker sales. However, the numbers show that Valve can not only significantly increase the prize fund of the majors but give the entire amount from the sale of capsules to the teams. The company will not even notice this, considering the size of the profits.
But this is hard to be expected, given that the pro-scene is already in excellent condition. There are many tournaments from different TOs, both for tier-1 teams and weaker teams. Valve's intervention is not required, and if it is needed, the company will always have the means for it.
