The setting of MSAA in Counter-Strike 2 kills FPS

Enthusiasts on Reddit constantly conduct various tests and challenges in our favorite game. And today they got around to the MSAA smoothing setting in the new version of the game CS2. Let's say right away the results were stunning.

To begin with, it should be noted that the tests were conducted on quite a good system for CS:GO:

  • CPU - i5-12400F
  • GPU - GTX 1660
  • RAM - 16GB

Now let's move on to the tests themselves.

Average FPS:

  • None — 417
  • CMAA2 — 382 frames per second (-8.7%)
  • MSAA 2x — 355 frames per second (-16.0%)
  • MSAA 4x — 310 frames per second (-29.4%)
  • MSAA 8x — 243 frames per second (-52.7%)

Impressive, right? Minus 50% of your FPS is simply eaten by the MSAA setting. And basically, it doesn't matter what your resolution and other settings are — the result will be the same, if not worse.

But there's a chance that the developers will fix this issue. After all, in CS:GO the difference between the disabled function and MSAA 8x is only 15-20%.

Should you enable smoothing?

The question of whether to enable or disable smoothing in CSGO generates different opinions, depending on the type of player. For casual players, it is recommended to enable smoothing. It improves graphics quality and makes the gaming process more intense, but at the same time can increase the load on the system.

However, competitive players, who strive for maximum performance, often disable the frame rate stabilization function and frame time. In competitive esports, basic skills are especially important, and professional gamers don't need additional graphical effects that could negatively affect performance or their sporting characteristics.

However, for casual players this issue is not so critical. They are more concerned with whether their computer is capable enough to enhance graphics. If they have enough power, then enabling smoothing could be a good option to improve the quality of the game's visual perception.
