A new record for the most rounds played on a single map in Counter-Strike 2 was set at the ESL Pro League Season 20 tournament. M80 and fnatic played an incredible 71 rounds on the Anubis map, surpassing the previous record of 64 rounds.
What makes this record particularly interesting is the fact that the previous record lasted only two weeks. It was set on August 28 by teams Rhyno and Zero Tenacity on the Vertigo map. Furthermore, this match raises the bar for all future encounters at major CS2 tournaments.
Context and previous achievements
The record of 71 rounds on the Anubis map not only surpassed online achievements, but was also an important event for LAN matches. Previously, the maximum number of rounds on LAN was 54 when TYLOO met The MongolZ at eXTREMESLAND 2023. At major events such as the ESL Pro League, the 42 rounds figure has been reached five times, including the recent match between Eternal Fire and Natus Vincere.
M80's breakthrough and record-breaking win
For Team M80, this match was a real breakthrough. They made the playoffs of a major event for the first time in their history, overcoming fnatic in an eight-round overtime at Anubis (37-34) and then defeating them at Inferno (16-13) in extra time. This was a historic moment not only for M80, but for the entire North American region, where previously no team other than Complexity and Liquid had made the playoffs since 2019.
M80 showed incredible resilience by committing gambles on both maps. On Anubis, they battled back from 8-11 and then were able to hold on for a dramatic overtime win with a round of 71 in a 2v3 situation. On Inferno, the team again showed character, overcoming a 5-11 score thanks to strong play on the T side.
Significance for the CS2 scene
M80's victory was an important moment for the North American region, which has recently seen a decline in results at international tournaments. This success could be a boost for new teams and players from the region looking to make a name for themselves on the world stage. M80 will now face Imperial for the top spot in the group and keep their chances of advancing to the quarterfinals of ESL Pro League Season 20 alive.
