The tournament operator ESL announced a change in the format of the Pro League competition. The announcement was made on the company's official website.
What Will Change In ESL Pro League Season 17?
- The group stage format was a round-robin and became a double-elimination with a last-chance grid.
- The number of participants was 24 teams, and now it's 32.
- The Conference championship was moved online and divided into regions.
- The tournament will last five to six weeks.
Group Stage Format
The purpose of the format change is to increase the importance of group-stage matches. Thirty-two teams will be divided into four groups of eight teams. The groups will go through a double-elimination system with a last-chance bracket. The winners of the groups will go directly to the RO8 stage, the second place will go to RO12, and the third and fourth places will go to RO16.

The number of participants increased to 32 — 15 partner teams, three teams from the ESL rating, three participants who passed through the ESL Challenger, and 11 teams from the Conference stage.
EPL Conference
The EPL Conference Championship before the ESL Pro League Season 17 has been moved online and divided into regions. This will be the last tournament of the series. Due to the expansion of the number of participants in the EPL group stage, the Conference stage will be canceled, and the distribution of slots will be as follows:
- 15 — to ESL partner teams.
- 3 — to the best teams from the ESL world ranking.
- 2 — to the winners of the ESL Challenger.
- 4 — to the best teams from the ESL regional rating for Europe.
- 2 — to the best teams from the ESL regional rating for North America.
- 2 — to the best teams from the ESL regional ranking for South America.
- 2 — to the best teams from the ESL regional rating for Asia.
- 2 — to the best teams from the ESL regional rating for Oceania.
ESL Pro League Season 17 will be held from March 1 to April 2 in Malta. The teams will draw a prize fund of $835,000.
