Valve acknowledged a miscommunication error with Perfect World that led to confusion over seeding rules for the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024. The issue arose from the decision to use Valve rankings instead of the results of European RMR tournaments to determine participants in the Elimination Stage.
Change of seeding rules mid-RMR
Perfect World announced on Friday that the seeding for the Elimination Stage would be based on Valve rankings, despite the rules previously stating RMR results. The announcement came when the European RMRs were already underway, and the fourth team from RMR Group A had been determined.
This sudden change caused discontent, especially among teams like BIG. The German team, having finished the tournament with a 3-0 score and expecting a top-16 spot in the Elimination Stage, will now have to start from the Opening Stage. BIG is ranked 15th in the European Valve rankings, and it's uncertain if they will make it to the Elimination Stage.
Valve's statement
Valve stated to HLTV that they acknowledged their fault in this situation:
In our communication with Perfect World, there was a mix-up, and we failed to notice that their rules were not updated according to the latest changes in the Supplemental Rulebook
Despite the apology, the company stated that the decision was based on the experience of the Copenhagen Major, where VRS was already used to enhance matches.
Valve Rankings update and next steps
An update to the Valve rankings will be released tomorrow to determine the eight teams progressing to the Elimination Stage, as well as the initial matches of the Opening Stage. For many teams, this will be disappointing and unfortunate news if it causes them to start in a lower stage and hinders their advancement.
Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 kicks off on November 30 and runs until December 15. The tournament will feature 24 teams competing for a total prize pool of $1,250,000. For more detailed information about the tournament and to follow it, you can visit the link.
