André Fufuca, the new Minister of Sport in Brazil, has recognized esports as a sport and also announced the creation of a special agency dedicated to this sector. The minister made this statement in an interview.
The opinion of the new minister differs from that of his predecessor, Ana Mozer, who repeatedly stated that she does not consider esports a sport.
I have a somewhat different vision of this issue. We definitely view esports as a sport. We see its capabilities and scale. You can see the number of competitions held at the national level. It is impossible to turn a blind eye to this topic, and we will certainly consider it as a sport.
Earlier, Rio de Janeiro hosted IEM Rio Major 2022, and later another major event in CS:GO - IEM Rio 2023. In 2018, Brazil already hosted a big tournament in CS — ESL One Belo Horizonte, and in 2016 São Paulo hosted the finals of ESL Pro League Season 4."
