Riot Games has made an adjustment to the regulations for the LEC Summer 2025, reinstating the Head-to-Head Game Score criterion (results of head-to-head matches by maps) for determining placements in the group stage. This change was implemented mid-split, sparking discussions within the community.
According to LEC Commissioner Artyom Bykov, this criterion was mistakenly omitted from the document and should have been included in the original tiebreaker procedures.
Updated Tiebreaker Procedures (Section 7.5.13 of the rules):
- Head-to-Head Game Score (results of head-to-head matches by maps)
- Total placements in winter and spring splits
- Placement in the spring split
- Strength of Victory — cumulative results of teams defeated by the team
- Time of victories in head-to-head matches
- Total time of victories
- Draw (coinflip)
For teams tied for fifth place, a separate rule applies: after applying the above criteria in a two-way tie, an additional match will be played, and the loser will exit the LEC and lose playoff chances.
The change has not yet affected the standings, as the group stage is still ongoing. However, some fans criticized the league for adjusting the rules after the competition started, calling it a blow to competitive integrity and a dangerous precedent.
Changing the rules mid-split, two weeks before the end. The change itself isn't bad, but it creates an impression of careless league management.Noted one user on X
