The show's creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who directed and wrote all three seasons, promises a darker and more emotionally deep storyline. "I wanted to show how people maintain their humanity in conditions of fierce competition," he said in an interview.
The third season will continue exploring psychological pressure, the return of familiar players, and the clash between Ki-hoon and the mysterious Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). Detective Joon-ho (Wi Ha-joon) also returns, attempting to expose the criminal organization from within. New additions include new characters and games, including the doll Cheol-su.
Unlike the four-year gap between the first and second seasons, the third season arrives just six months after the previous one. This was possible because both seasons were written and filmed back-to-back. Initially, Hwang envisioned them as one large season but later decided to split the story for better pacing and dramatic structure.
Since its premiere in 2021, Squid Game has become Netflix's most popular series, spawning unofficial spin-offs, merchandise, reality shows, and significantly impacting the gaming industry. The series inspired the creation of specific modes, servers, and collaborations with gaming projects such as Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, Call of Duty, and inspired imitator games that either took the Squid Game concept or recreated it in a new format.
Additionally, Netflix itself released a mobile game in 2024 called Squid Game Unleashed, where players can compete in games seen in the series as well as entirely original games.
Although a fourth season has not been officially confirmed, Hwang has hinted at a possible spin-off that would delve deeper into the Front Man's story. However, for now, the third season is the official conclusion of the main storyline.
The Netflix series Squid Game consists of 3 full seasons. A spin-off is also expected in the future.
The premiere of the Squid Game Season 3 in the USA will be at 12:00 AM for the West Coast and 3:01 AM for the East Coast.
The new season of Squid Game will have 6 episodes, concluding the series' story.
