Blumhouse Productions, known for its horror films, is working on a movie adaptation of the popular co-op horror game Phasmophobia. Teaming up with James Wan’s company Atomic Monster and game developer Kinetic Games, the project aims to bring the atmosphere of paranormal terror to the big screen.
Phasmophobia was developed by Kinetic Games, which is based in the UK and released in early access in 2020.The game soon gained popularity due to its co-op play: the players play as ghost hunters investigating creepy sites and attempting to detect various kinds of spirits. Its unique blend of psychological horror and team-based mechanics has sold over 23 million copies worldwide and earned the Best Debut Game award at The Game Awards 2020.
Daniel Knight, director of Kinetic Games, commented:
“We could never have imagined how far this game would go when we launched it five years ago. We are truly grateful to our community for the impact Phasmophobia has had on the gaming industry and beyond.”
Blumhouse, the studio behind Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, is working on the film alongside Atomic Monster — producers of The Conjuring and Annabelle. The collaboration between these studios signals strong industry confidence in the project and a promise to stay true to the spirit of the original game.
While plot details and the cast have yet to be revealed, the involvement of horror heavyweights suggests a serious approach to the adaptation.
Alongside the film announcement, Kinetic Games has also revealed a major game update called “Chronicle”, scheduled for June. The update will overhaul the level and progression systems, introduce new maps, and refresh existing ones — including a revamp of the Grafton Farmhouse. These changes aim to reinvigorate the gameplay experience and maintain community engagement.
Players have welcomed the news with excitement and speculation. On Reddit, fans are actively discussing potential storylines and expressing hopes that the film will capture the game’s chilling atmosphere. One user even suggested: “Imagine going through Tanglewood or other maps like a real-life escape room!”
The Phasmophobia adaptation marks a significant milestone for Kinetic Games and the growing trend of video game adaptations. With Blumhouse and Atomic Monster on, fans can look forward to a true horror experience in theaters.
