Mortal Kombat 2 Movie: Release Date and Everything We Know So Far

Warner Bros. has officially confirmed that Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel to the 2021 reboot film, will hit theaters on October 24, 2025. Simon McQuoid returns as director, with the screenplay written by Jeremy Slater, known for Moon Knight. The film promises even more blood, brutality, and finally, the legendary Mortal Kombat tournament.

What will the sequel be about?

The sequel's events will unfold following the finale of the 2021 film, where Shang Tsung was defeated in his attempt to destroy Earthrealm. Now the real fight begins. After nine consecutive losses, another defeat would mean the complete conquest of Earth by the forces of Outworld.

Franchise co-creator Ed Boon hinted that this time viewers will see not only brutal fights—the tournament will feature visual scorekeeping, highlighting the fatal consequences of each clash.

Although the 2021 film was more of a prelude, the sequel will finally showcase the full-fledged tournament fans have been eagerly awaiting. Reports suggest the sequel will delve into the deeper mythology of the game, including the uprising of Edenia against Shao Kahn and the possibility of resurrecting fallen warriors under Quan Chi's control. Given the franchise's history, characters like Sub-Zero and Kung Lao—considered dead—might return in darker and transformed forms.

Star-studded Cast of Mortal Kombat 2

Returning to their roles are Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), and Tadanobu Asano (Raiden). Chin Han reprises his role as the devious sorcerer Shang Tsung, while Joe Taslim returns in a mysterious role—possibly as the resurrected Noob Saibot following the fiery demise of his character Bi-Han in the first film.

The sequel will also introduce several fan-favorite characters in live-action for the first time:

  • Karl Urban as the charismatic and self-absorbed Johnny Cage
  • Adeline Rudolph as the warrior princess from Edenia, Kitana
  • Martyn Ford as the tyrannical emperor Shao Kahn
  • Damon Herriman as the dark sorcerer Quan Chi
  • CJ Bloomfield as the monstrous Baraka
  • Tati Gabrielle as the shadowy assassin Jade
  • Desmond Chiam and Ana Thu Nguyen as King Jerrod and Queen Sindel, Kitana's parents

Filming for Mortal Kombat 2 wrapped up in January 2024 after delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike. Production resumed in November 2023 in Australia, and it has been confirmed that the film will include scenes shot for the IMAX format—for an even more immersive visual experience and spectacular inter-realm battles.

Is there a trailer for Mortal Kombat 2?

While there is no official trailer yet, early glimpses of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, along with Kitana, Shao Kahn, and Scorpion have already sparked excitement among fans. The first teaser is expected to drop mid-2025, possibly at summer events like San Diego Comic-Con.

Despite mixed reviews of the 2021 film, the growing fan interest, expansion of the Mortal Kombat universe, and recognizable heroes have created significant buzz around Mortal Kombat 2. The decision to release the film exclusively in theaters indicates Warner Bros.' confidence in its box office potential.
