Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link canceled

Square Enix officially canceled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link on May 14, 2025, the action RPG that had been in development for both iOS and Android and used GPS. First revealed in April 2022, the game had already been pushed back several times and had most recently been pushed back indefinitely in November 2024.

Reasons Behind the Cancellation

In an official announcement, the company revealed that due to the efforts of the development team as well as a number of closed betas, they realized that the game could not provide a long-term and satisfying experience for players. Therefore, the company decided to cancel the project.

Mixed Fan Reactions Across the Community

The news quickly spread across gaming forums and social media, sparking a wave of reactions from longtime fans and mobile gaming enthusiasts alike:

  • Disappointment from dedicated fans: Many players who had participated in the closed beta expressed frustration, saying the game showed promise and had unique potential within the mobile RPG space. On Reddit’s, one user wrote:“The beta had issues, but it felt like something fresh for KH. Really sad to see it scrapped so soon.”
  • Relief from skeptics: Others were less surprised by the cancellation, pointing to Square Enix’s spotty track record with mobile titles. Some users on X (formerly Twitter) argued that the concept was flawed from the start: “Another mobile KH game bites the dust. Maybe focus on KH4 instead of GPS gimmicks.”
  • Frustration over wasted potential: A recurring sentiment was frustration over lost time and effort. Fans lamented the resources spent on a game that never saw full release, and some questioned Square Enix’s long-term planning for the Kingdom Hearts franchise.
