During the Nintendo Direct broadcast dedicated to Donkey Kong Bananza, Nintendo shared details about its brand-new 3D adventure platformer, set to release on July 17 exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.
During the 15-minute presentation, several major announcements were made, including the revelation that Donkey Kong's mysterious ally, named Odd Rock, is actually a young version of Pauline.
Yes, the same Pauline — the former "damsel in distress" from the original Donkey Kong arcade, who became a singer in Super Mario Odyssey — will be DK's enigmatic companion in this game. Initially appearing as a strange creature named Odd Rock, she is revealed early in the game as Pauline and joins forces with Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong Bananza is the first original 3D adventure for DK since Donkey Kong 64 (1999). The game is set in the underground world of Ingot Isle, where Donkey Kong and Pauline embark on a journey through banana-rich caves in search of the mythical core of the planet.
Their mission is to stop the sinister mining corporation Void Company, led by Void Kong, with new enemies Grumpy Kong and Poppy Kong assisting him.
The gameplay of Bananza focuses on destruction and transformations. Players can smash, roll, tear, and "surf" through layers of the underground world using DK's signature strength. New moves include Dive Punch, Hand Slap, and Turf Surfing, each offering unique ways to overcome obstacles and find hidden items.
A unique mechanic is Bananergy, energy accumulated from collecting golden bananas that allows Pauline to activate DK's animal transformations:
Each form has its tactical advantages and limited duration, adding planning to the chaotic gameplay.
The game features full local co-op for two players: one controls DK, while the other controls Pauline, who can break barriers and assist in combat with her singing. With mouse-like Joy-Con 2 control, players can precisely aim vocal attacks and create sculptures in DK Artist mode.
Collectibles play a key role in the gameplay. Players can find:
There are also Assist Modes, a photo mode, and a music player to listen to Pauline's vocal tracks.
Long-time fans of the Donkey Kong series will be pleased with the return of Cranky Kong and Rambi, while observant viewers noticed cameos by Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, possibly linked to new mini-games like the Bananza race mode. New characters, including Giant Elders, act as mystical allies teaching powerful musical abilities.
Nintendo confirmed new Donkey Kong and Pauline amiibo figures, which will be released alongside the game. Scanning them unlocks the Diva Dress for Pauline and powerful KONG Tiles. Other Donkey Kong series amiibo provide unique rewards, while general amiibo offer useful landscape materials.
Donkey Kong Bananza is set to release on July 17, 2025, and will be one of the major exclusive games for Nintendo Switch 2. It seems we are in for an exciting new platformer from Nintendo since the release of Super Mario Odyssey: with engaging co-op, rich gameplay, creative abilities, and a familiar-yet-fresh character lineup, Bananza might just be the long-awaited return of Donkey Kong to the Nintendo gaming arena.
