In the Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion, players can encounter and defeat many optional bosses. Jori Elder Inquisitor stands out as a moderately challenging opponent you will face.
This powerful mage, hidden deep in the Abyssal Woods, wields potent arcane magic and summons allies to fight by his side. This guide will provide you with details on how to prepare and counter Jori Elder Inquisitor.
Jori, Elder Inquisitor Location
To find Jori, you first need to reach the Darklight Catacombs Site of Grace. This location is situated in the labyrinthine dungeons leading to the Abyssal Woods, a mysterious and dangerous area in the Land of Shadow.
Starting from the Darklight Catacombs Site of Grace, you need to descend four levels of the dungeon to reach the golden mist wall marking the entrance to Jori's lair. Given the dungeon's darkness, which complicates visibility, it's best to bring a torch. As you navigate the underground corridors, you'll encounter numerous enemies lurking in the shadows.
Turn right from the entrance, defeating enemies until you find a lever. Pulling this lever will illuminate the area and raise a stone platform similar to the one you used to enter the catacombs from the Abyssal Woods.
On the second floor, continue straight, then turn left, descending further into the dungeon. Follow the main path through a series of interconnected rooms until you reach another lever. This lever activates a platform, raising it to your level and allowing you to continue your journey.
On the third floor, you'll face a new danger: a large enemy capable of shooting massive fireballs from its mouth. Simply try to avoid these projectiles and turn left to find another lever. Pulling it will once again illuminate the dungeon and lower the platform where the enemy stands, opening a path leading to another descent. This path will eventually lead you to the mist wall and the upcoming battle with Jori Elder Inquisitor.
Jori, Elder Inquisitor Weakness
Despite appearing formidable, Jori has a few weak points you can exploit. Physical damage is particularly effective against Jori Elder Inquisitor. If you wield a greatsword, you're in luck, as jump attacks can break Jori's stance, providing windows for critical hits.
That's Jori Elder Inquisitor weakness. Additionally, ranged attacks can also be highly effective. Hiding behind tombstones and rocks, you can shoot at Jori from a safe distance. Those using a crossbow or bow will find this strategy especially beneficial.
Preparing for the Battle with Jori, Elder Inquisitor
Primarily, Jori Elder Inquisitor uses holy-type damage for ranged attacks. To counter this, use items and gear that increase your resistance to holy damage. The Golden Braid talisman will be particularly useful, as it helps neutralize some of the damage from Jori's holy spells.
Keep in mind that Jori is resistant to holy, magic, and lightning damage, making weapons dealing these types of damage less effective. However, Jori is slightly weak to fire damage. Using fire-based spells and weapons, such as those enhanced with Ashes of War that deal fire damage, can give you an advantage in this battle.
One of Jori Elder Inquisitor most powerful moves is summoning several inquisitor allies who share the boss's magical abilities. Although these summoned enemies can be defeated with one hit, they can overwhelm you if not managed properly. Bring weapons or spells capable of crowd control to efficiently deal with these minions.
First Phase of the Battle with Jori, Elder Inquisitor
Entering the boss area, Jori will greet you with blade-like magical attacks that will fly towards you. Dodge them as soon as they get close to your character.
Next, watch out for the boss's magical AoE attack. Occasionally, Jori will use an AoE spell, indicated by a golden aura beneath him, which activates after a short time, dealing damage. When you see this, roll away or simply move out of the way to avoid damage. Use this moment to approach the boss and land a hit, especially from behind, to deal more damage.
One of the Jori Elder Inquisitor simpler attacks is a regular staff strike, which is fairly easy to dodge since he doesn't perform complex combos with it. However, if you deal close-range damage to the boss, he may release a projectile from his staff, so keep that in mind. Also, if you stay near the boss for too long, he might teleport to the other end of the arena, forcing you to chase him while he launches magical projectiles at you.
Tips for the First Phase of the Battle
- Prepare the Flask of Wondrous Physicks for magic resistance. This can be done with the Opaline Tear, which reduces magic damage by 15% for three minutes. This will significantly lessen the damage from Jori's magical attacks.
- Use the Crystal Tear to restore stamina during the fight. Running and dodging consume a lot of stamina, so using the Greenburst Crystal Tear or Greenspill Crystal Tear will help you quickly regain stamina or prevent its significant loss for a while.
- Wear armor that provides resistance to magical damage to accordingly reduce damage from Jori's magical attacks. This allows you to withstand more hits without succumbing to the boss's spells.
- Beware of Jori's magical strike. Upon entering the boss room, Jori Elder Inquisitor will launch a magical strike at you. Dodge it carefully, as this attack requires precise timing. Jori can also perform a more powerful magical strike, which you can dodge with good timing.
- Prepare for frequent running. Jori often keeps a long distance, using teleportation to attack. Therefore, you'll need to constantly chase him to attack.
Second Phase of the Battle with Jori, Elder Inquisitor
The second phase of the battle begins when Jori's health drops to 50%. Although many attacks remain the same, there are additional elements to watch out for.
Beware of enemy summons. Jori will summon 2 to 5 phantoms. Mostly, these are four smaller and one large phantom. The smaller ones breathe fire or use magic similar to Jori, while the larger one deals significant physical and fire damage. Focus on eliminating the large phantom first, avoiding the smaller ones. After defeating the spirits, you can focus again on Jori.
Watch out for multiple magical AoE blasts. At one point, Jori will summon several AoE magical attacks in your location. The best strategy is to run around the arena to avoid these blasts.
Summon a spirit ash. If you're struggling with this fight, consider summoning a spirit ash to distract Jori Elder Inquisitor, and the summoned phantoms. This allows you to focus on attacking the boss without worrying about other enemies.
General Tips for Fighting Jori, Elder Inquisitor
- Jori Elder Inquisitor often launches magical projectiles at you. To counter this, roll forward and try to close the distance to the boss to attack him if your character is melee-oriented.
- Use items that protect against holy damage, such as the Lord’s Divine Fortification spell, Pearldrake Talisman +3, Haligdrake Talisman +3, and armor with high holy damage resistance.
- Once Jori's health drops to half or below, the boss will start summoning phantom allies. Avoid their attacks and focus on Jori. If you find it difficult to attack the boss due to the phantoms, try turning off auto-targeting to avoid switching focus to the summoned enemies.
- Otherwise, use a melee spirit ash to attract attention. This will help not only against Jori Elder Inquisitor, but also distract the summoned enemies, giving you more opportunities to attack the boss directly.
- If you can inflict Scarlet Rot on the Jori Elder Inquisitor, take advantage of this. It will deal periodic damage to him when he teleports, and you can't close the distance to the boss.
Rewards for Defeating Jori, Elder Inquisitor
Defeating Jori Elder Inquisitor is not the most difficult task, but like most boss battles, it may require several attempts before you succeed.
After victory, you will receive the Barbed Staff-Spear, the same weapon Jori uses for his spells. Additionally, you will earn 260,000 runes, which can be used to level up your character and progress further in the game.
