Have you ever wished that the furnace could smelt your raw iron twice as fast? Or smelt your inventory of spare armors quicker than your furnace can ever do? Well, you can fret no more, that’s what the blast furnace is for! Read more to find out how you can live the fast-paced life in Minecraft.
How to Use the Blast Furnace
The blast furnace interface, similar to a furnace and a smoker, features two horizontal slots on the left with a flame silhouette in between and an arrow pointing to a bigger slot on the right.

Place an item that you want to smelt at the top slot (input) and some fuel at the bottom slot. Once input has been placed, the flame icon and the arrow activates.
The output will appear after 5 seconds, the moment the item has finished the smelting process. Like any other smelting item in the game, the blast furnace smelts the items one at a time. The arrow pointing to the output indicates the progress of an individual item with the animation resetting after every output.
For fuel, you can always use the standard coal, charcoal, sticks, wood logs and a lava bucket. But if you are ever in a pinch, you can use blaze rods, bamboo, saplings, any wool items and any items made out of wood. The flame icon helps to indicate the amount of one individual fuel item that has been used up.
The blast furnace will continue smelting even after you close the interface. A flickering fire effect appears behind the grates of the blast furnace to show when it is in use.

Blast Furnace vs Furnace
Blast Furnace | Furnace |
can only smelt ores | can cook food items, smelt ores, smelt building materials and make charcoal |
takes 5 seconds to smelt | takes 10 seconds to smelt/cook |
can smelt 4 items using 1 unit of coal (more fuel) | can smelt 8 items using 1 unit of coal (less fuel) |
The number of items smelted per fuel are the same for both items.

Items that Can Be Smelted
Like a furnace, the blast furnace can smelt these items:
- Ores = Raw Iron, Raw Copper, Netherite Ore, Ancient Debris, etc..
- Ore Blocks = Redstone Ore, Diamond Ore, Iron Ore, Gold Ore, etc..
- Tools/Armor = Iron Helmet, Chainmail Leggings, Iron Pickaxe, Gold Horse Armor, etc..
Some ores are smelted into ingots such as iron ingots and copper ingots while ore blocks are smelted into minerals like redstone dust, coal, diamond. Tools and armors smelts into iron and gold nuggets that in turn, can be crafted into iron ingots, chains, lanterns, gold ingots and golden carrots.
Where Can You Find a Blast Furnace
Crafting a blast furnace requires 1 furnace, 5 iron ingots and 3 smooth stone. Place the furnace in the middle slot, the smooth stone in the bottom row and fill in the rest of the slots with 5 iron ingots. Alternatively, rather than making a blast furnace, you can find one in an armorer’s house in a village or in trail ruins.
