All Shadow of the Erdtree Axes Overview

In the Shadow of the Erdtree, developers have added dozens of different types of weapons that allow you to defeat enemies in various ways and with style, depending on your preferences. While exploring the new lands of this DLC, you might find some of these weapons, while others may remain undiscovered. Therefore, in this article, we will discuss all types of axes you can arm yourself with.

Forked-Tongue Hatchet

The Forked-Tongue Hatchet is an intriguing new axe introduced in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. To find it, you need to defeat imps armed with axes hiding in the catacombs scattered throughout the Realm of Shadow. These creatures can be found and slain at the beginning of the Fog Rift Catacombs location. This dungeon is located in a foggy forest northwest of Castle Ensis in the Gravestie Plain.

To increase your chances of obtaining this weapon, you should improve your Discovery stat by raising your Arcane attribute or using consumables such as the Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot or Silver Horn Tender. The Forked-Tongue Hatchet has balanced speed and damage, causes bleeding, and has the Dragonform Flame skill. This skill allows you to release fire over a large area. The cost for this skill is 14 FP, and it cannot be combined with Ashes of War, but it can be temporarily enchanted with magic or consumables.

Messmer Soldier's Axe

Next on our list is the Messmer Soldier's Axe — a formidable weapon that can be obtained by defeating Messmer soldiers armed with axes. These soldiers can be found in Castle Ensis and the Shadow Keep dungeons, as well as in soldier camps in Gravesite Plain and Scadu Altus.

If you want to acquire this weapon, head to the southern part of the soldier camp near the Castle Front grace site in Gravesite Plain. Like the Forked-Tongue Hatchet, increasing your Discovery stat or using specific consumables can help you obtain this axe with a higher chance. The Messmer Soldier's Axe has balanced speed and damage and grants the War Cry skill, which boosts your attack power. While active, your strong attacks become charged attacks, giving you an advantage in battle. The cost for this skill is 16 FP.

Death Knight's Twin Axes

For those seeking a more powerful weapon, the Death Knight's Twin Axes is your choice. These axes can be obtained by defeating the Death Knight boss at the end of the Fog Rift Catacombs in the northern Gravesite Plain. To reach this dungeon, head northwest from the Castle Front grace site, pass through the soldiers in the gorge, and make your way through the foggy forest northwest of Castle Ensis.

The Death Knight's Twin Axes can be wielded in both hands, dealing 101 physical and 65 base lightning damage. The Blinkbolt: Twinaxe skill turns you into a high-speed lightning charge. This skill allows you to move forward rapidly, with a strong attack executing a charged lightning spinning strike. The skill costs between 8 and 10 FP.

Smithscript Axe

The Smithscript Axe is another captivating additional weapon in the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. This axe features a throwing capability during heavy attacks, adding a ranged element to your melee arsenal. You can find the Smithscript Axe in the Taylew's Ruined Forge dungeon, northeast of the Rauh base.

To reach Taylew's Ruined Forge, go northeast from the Moorth Ruins grace site in Scadu Altus until you find a shallow lake. Pass through the nearby cave, battling poisonous flowers and Perfumer enemies, then head northwest through the poison field. After passing through a stone tunnel full of Gravebirds, you'll arrive at the Rauh base. Touch the Ancient Ruins Base grace site if you haven't already, then take the road leading north, guarded by Messmer Soldiers and Feathered Beast-Men.

At the end of the road, you'll find a stone ruin with three braziers and large support beams of an arch. Pass under the arch near two braziers and enter the crack in the wall to find yourself in Taylew's Ruined Forge, where the weapon is located. The Smithscript Axe can be thrown at enemies during a heavy attack, initiating continuous strikes with the Wild Strikes skill.

Bonny Butchering Knife

The Bonny Butchering Knife is a different type of axe (a Greataxe class, like the next weapon we'll discuss), primarily scaling with strength and dexterity. This weapon has a unique ability to restore a small amount of HP with each successful hit. It also has the Hone Blade skill, which increases the amount of health restored.

To obtain this weapon, head to Bonny Village, located in the lower part of Scadu Atlas, slightly south of Manus Metyr Cathedral and east of Moorth Ruins. Pass through the cave in Moorth Ruins, climb the stairs, and you'll find yourself in Bonny Village. The Bonny Village grace site will be right in front of you. Find the ruined building near the broken bridge in the center of the village, and you'll find the Bonny Butchering Knife on a body inside.

Death Knight's Longhaft Axe

Another powerful weapon that can be obtained from the Death Knight is the Death Knight's Longhaft Axe. You can acquire it by defeating the eponymous boss in the Scorpion River Catacombs dungeon, located northwest of Rauh Base. The entrance is past many Scorpion beasts at the end of the northwestern river in Rauh Base, surrounded by sarcophagi and militia at the foot of a huge rock.

To reach this dungeon, go through the Perfumer cave north of Moorth Ruins in Scadu Altus. Once you reach the Scorpion River Catacombs, proceed to the end and defeat the Death Knight boss to obtain the Death Knight's Longhaft Axe and the Cerulean Amber Medallion +3. This axe has the Blinkbolt: Long-hafted Axe skill, which turns you into a bolt of lightning and executes a charged lightning jumping strike.

Putrescence Cleaver

Finally, the Putrescence Cleaver is an axe that can be obtained by exchanging the Remembrance of Putrescence with Finger Reader Enia in Roundtable Hold. To get the Remembrance of Putrescence, defeat the Putrescent Knight boss in the Stone Coffin Fissure dungeon on the southern Cerulean coast.

The Putrescence Cleaver causes frost buildup, scales with your Arcane attribute, and has the Spinning Guillotine skill. This skill allows you to strike the blade down and continue rapid spinning strikes as long as you have stamina.
