How To Play Previous Puzzles
The Mini Crossword is completely free to play on the website, unlike some other NYT Games. However, playing previous days’ puzzles from the archives can only be unlocked by subscribing to The New York Times Games. The subscription gives you access to all of their games and their archives- which, if you’re a puzzle fanatic, might be worth it.
How To Play
The Mini Crossword works just like any normal crossword puzzle. To solve the puzzle, you will need to enter letters in each box, with each numbered horizontal row and vertical column spelling out a different word. Hints are given for each available word, both across(horizontal) and down(vertical). These 5 buttons below, situated above the hints on screen, are there to help you in solving the crossword.
Rebus
Clicking it will enable rebus mode. Rebuses are an element in crossword where the answer requires multiple letters in one box. Read more here to understand how it works.
Clear
Incomplete/ Word: on highlighted across/down boxes will clear any unchecked and/or incorrect letters.
Puzzle: clears all unchecked and/or incorrect letters of every box.
Puzzle & Timer: will reset your puzzle back to square one, erasing even the correct letters.
Reveal
Square: will reveal the correct letter of the box, highlighted in orange.
Word: will reveal the correct word of the across/down boxes, highlighted in blue and orange. Puzzle: will reveal the correct letters of every box in the puzzle. Any revealed letter/word will be marked.
Check
Autocheck: enables autocheck mode, where it instantly confirms whether a letter is correct or incorrect as you type them
Square: checks the letter inside the box highlighted in orange
Word: checks the word inside boxes highlighted in blue and orange.
Puzzle: checks the letter in every box of the puzzle.
Pencil
Clicking it will enable pencil mode. Word/letters in this mode are grey in colour. This helps you to differentiate answers that you're certain of and words that you just jotted down as a placeholder. Click again to switch back to pen mode.
