Despite the quarterfinals losses, Liquid and The MongolZ had an extremely successful Major

Liquid and The MongolZ both ended their runs at the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 in the quarterfinals. Liquid fell to Spirit, while The MongolZ were defeated by MOUZ, both with 2-0 scores. Despite these tough losses, their journeys were nothing short of remarkable. Reaching the playoffs exceeded all expectations and marked one of the best performances in their histories.

Surpassing Low Expectations

Before the Major, few expected either Liquid or The MongolZ to make such deep runs. Many assumed both teams would clear the Opening Stage but struggle in the Elimination Stage. Reaching the playoffs seemed far-fetched, especially with strong competition from top-tier teams.

However, The MongolZ surprised everyone by dominating the Elimination Stage with a flawless 3-0 record, beating heavyweights like G2, MOUZ, and HEROIC. Their disciplined gameplay, solid map pool, and sharp aim propelled them to the playoffs, setting a historic milestone as the first Asian team to reach this stage.

Liquid’s path was less dominant but equally inspiring. While they faced weaker opponents on paper, they secured wins against key teams like FURIA, MIBR, and GamerLegion. Their only Elimination Stage loss before the playoffs came against NAVI, showing resilience despite facing tough challenges. Liquid’s return to the Major playoffs, especially after missing PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, was an unexpected success.

Liquid’s Budget Roster Defies the Odds

Liquid’s achievement is even more impressive considering their roster’s relatively low budget. The team picked up free agent Justin "jks" Savage and a mostly unknown Polish AWPer, Roland "ultimate" Tomkowiak, to complete their lineup. These low-cost acquisitions paid off spectacularly.

Under the leadership of Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken, who transitioned into the in-game leader role for the first time in his career, Liquid overperformed. They turned a seemingly average lineup into a competitive force, reaching the Major playoffs for the first time in years. Considering their financial constraints, Liquid’s run is a testament to strategic team-building and exceptional coaching. This is even more impressive after the previous disastrous attempt under the leadership of Casper "cadiaN" Møller.

The MongolZ’s Historic Achievement

The MongolZ’s playoff appearance is the greatest achievement in the history of Asian Counter-Strike. Just six months ago at the Copenhagen Major, they were eliminated in the Elimination Stage at the 15-16th place. Now, they’ve broken that barrier, setting a new standard for Asian teams.

The MongolZ have firmly established themselves as the top team in Asia and a rising force in the global CS2 scene. The previous time the team from Valve’s Asia region achieved something similar was at StarLadder Berlin Major 2019. Back then Renegades reached the semifinals, but their roster was mostly Oceanic and featured European players and coaches.

Regional Slot Adjustments for the Next Major

One of the most significant consequences of Liquid and The MongolZ’s playoff runs is the redistribution of regional slots for the next Major. Previously, all eight direct Elimination Stage invitations went to European teams. However, that will change for the BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025.

Due to their playoff appearances, both Asia and the Americas have secured one direct Elimination Stage spot each. This adjustment breaks Europe’s monopoly and creates new opportunities for teams from traditionally underrepresented regions. If Liquid and The MongolZ maintain their dominance, they could benefit directly by skipping early tournament stages next year.

Boosting Their Valve Rankings

The Major also brought significant improvements in Valve’s official team rankings. As of now, The MongolZ ranks fifth globally, while Liquid sits at ninth. These rankings solidify their positions as the best teams in their respective regions.

Looking ahead, Valve’s upcoming tournament system will be based solely on rankings, eliminating partner slots. This change ensures that both teams will receive invites to big international tournaments, setting them up for continued success in 2025.

Looking Forward

Liquid and The MongolZ's performance at the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 was nothing short of extraordinary. They shattered expectations, boosted their regional standings, and secured brighter futures in the evolving CS2 competitive landscape. Their journeys prove that hard work, determination, and smart team-building can overcome even the toughest odds.
