With this layout, your pawns efficiently transport goods only for short distances. Also, your pack animals such as muffalos, alpacas, or even elephants should be kept in small pens about 9×9 tiles close to the storage. This way, your pack animals can be roped and readied in less than an hour, which is critical during caravan prep time.

Timing: Start Early, Avoid Delays

The best time to start forming a caravan is right after your pawns wake up, around 4:00 AM game time. Starting early ensures that colonists have full rest bars and can focus on the task without interruptions. If you begin later in the day, you risk delays from hunger, sleepiness, or mental breaks, especially if hauling takes longer than expected. Adjust pawn schedules ahead of time to prioritize work during those crucial morning hours.

Smart Loading Strategies

One powerful trick is to temporarily assign extra pawns to the caravan. Even if they’re not meant to travel, their help in loading can dramatically reduce the prep time. Once the caravan is fully loaded, you can remove these extra colonists before departure. Pawns outside the caravan will also assist in hauling if their priorities are set appropriately, so double-check their work schedules before initiating the process.

Packing Only Necessary

Avoid stuffing your caravan with junk to improve its efficiency. Low-value gear, corpses, or chunks hinder your group’s progress and should be avoided. Instead, prioritize fuel-efficient, high-value items which include silver, drugs, weapons, armor, and art. Choose pemmican or packaged survival meals over regular meals which spoil too quickly. If your journey lasts more than a day or two, bring along a cook pawn who can prepare foraged food with a campfire. Ensure you restock medicine of all kinds for emergencies.

Balancing Weight and Travel Speed

Keeping your caravan's weight below the maximum limit is critical. A caravan that is too heavy will move slowly on the world map and become more vulnerable to ambushes. Aim to stay under the load cap whenever possible. Use fast pack animals like horses or alpacas to improve both carrying capacity and speed. Elephants are particularly valuable, they carry a lot and don’t require frequent roping, but they’re also slower and harder to acquire.

Useful Workflow Tricks

One effective technique is to load the caravan with a large group, then scale it down before leaving. This makes the packing process faster while giving you flexibility to fine-tune your travel party. If it’s getting late in the day and your caravan isn’t ready, let your pawns and animals sleep near the exit tile, then resume forming the caravan the next morning. Another trick is the super-hauler method, assign a single pawn to a large load and cancel the caravan once they start hauling. They’ll still carry everything to the spot in one efficient trip.

Tech and Survival Gear

For longer expeditions, it’s wise to bring camping tools like campfires, bedrolls, passive coolers, and portable crafting benches. These items allow your group to cook, rest, and recover out on the road. Also include a dedicated medic and at least a few units of herbal or industrial medicine. Disease outbreaks, injuries, or even manhunter packs can turn a simple trip into a disaster without proper preparation.

Route Planning and Exit Strategy

Use the World Map's route planner to calculate travel time, forage rates, and food consumption. Choose a path that avoids dangerous biomes or known enemy factions. When forming the caravan, make sure the exit tile on your base map is positioned for easy access, mountain terrain or swamps can dramatically slow your departure and increase risk. A smart route can save days of travel and reduce the chance of being ambushed.
